Is there any way to make sage not try and be so helpful and record both shows?

mmmm, don't think so. Do you have Intelligent Recording on? I don't think that pertains to it, but it could reduce the frequency of that happening.

You could get two tuners.

You could not do favorites, and only do manual recordings.

I don't think this has ever been requested before. It has always been a feature. The new STVs allow you to restrict favorites to timeslots. This should completely resolve your problems.

The only fully compliant 2.1 stv is the original one. I rolled back to 2.0 after I had problems with running it as a service, so I didn't get to tinker much. I don't use timeslot favorites either, so someone else will have to chime in here. Sorry.

MalDude2 is based on 2.1 and has a (not fully tested) timeslot addition. However, it was based on the 2.1.7 RC4 beta. It has not been updated for 2.1.8 RC5 yet -- the timeslot feature should work & then you could return to testing the 2.1.8 OriginalV2.STV while keeping the timeslot setting for that fav.

You don't have to run Sage as a service. You can disable the service in 2.1 and run Sage like you did in 2.0.

I know, but I also lost the UI on my 350 and couldn't get it back. Reinstalled 2.0 and it worked. It was probably a driver problem, but after I got it working I told myself to wait for the gold release. I my system as a whole is unstable enough as it is, I don't need the help of a beta to crash things, I can do that on my own.

Can't wait for it to go gold.

You could consider a favorite option "Force first-run labelled airings to be considered re-runs when they occur after the very first airing." aka "Force non-first airings as ReRuns"

Why would it not be by default? I don't understand. Either the show is a "first airing" or it isn't. What gives?

Can I do a search for say ALL movies "first aired" in 2005? Or all kids shows "first aired" in 2005?
