Plugin Support for OSD and MediaPlayer?

What exactly does this mean? I'm curious as to what the use for this is an specifically what products this may be targeted to. -Rob

I _think_ the MediaPlayer plugin would refer to playing something other than mp3 music files, for example, but I'm not 100% sure.

The OSD plugin would enable adding support for alternative ways to display the OSD... such as on an Xcard. Anyone know how to program for the Xcard???

Just when I thought I had made up my mind to buy a tivo I find out that OSD support with the Xcard may be possible. Tough decisions.....

Hmmm.. Nice that they added those plugins... But how is anyone supposed to develop anything without more information/documentation?

I assume some of the Studio-HAVES have more info and are working on things (salsbst?)... But are the Studio-HAVE NOTS supposed to be able to use this feature?

Does anyone have any information if the availability of these plugins will actually allow an xcard to work. Is it possible to compile a plugin for the xcard or will it still be difficult. Is there any type of media server that will work.

So how do we get information on programming for this support? Is this going to be yet more of the same we've been seeing with Studio or is someone actually going to release an API we can code against (not holding my breath!!!!)

The page with the release notes says:
Quote:
Plugin support for On-Screen Display, Inputs and MediaPlayer (Developer information available)
You would have to ask Frey for clarification, but I would think that such a comment means that developers can ask to receive details about the interface for these plugins.

It should be _possible_ to add an Xcard plugin, but we need details about how to send the data to the Xcard -- That's why I asked if anyone knows how to do this. In the meantime, I've asked Frey to get the SDK from Sigma, but as you can see Jeff has been busy with 2.1.

Well, I personally think the people who will use the XCARD interface should be giving and willing to donate a buck or two to Sub if he goes through the work to do this.

In fact, Sub is probably the only person who has all of the knowledge readily available to do this in a reasonable amount of time. I know I wouldn't mind showing my gratitude in a more formal way.

Just a thought.

Jason

Thanks sub, when you get a response could you let us know if you think its doable. I'm really debating whether I should return my tivo and get an xcard and sagetv or not.

Ok, I have a 56in. widescreen rear-projection HDTV. If I get the x-card and hook it up to the tv... will it fit my screen without having to use any custom resolution/powerstrip settings? (of course I mean once a plugin is written for it) I ask, because I currently have it displaying through the DVI port of my ATI Radeon card. And after using powerstrip to adjust it to fit the screen the sides are all blurry.

Thanks,
Josh

The XCard is totally independant of the Video Card and the Windows Desktop. The Component out will use the whole screen and should not be blurry. The problem with Powerstrip it is kind of cheating and sending a signal that is not 100% ATSC spec. When I plugged my XCard and used the component outs the whole screen was filled. I have not tried it with any programs that have an OSD so I am not sure the impact on the OSD, but I am guessing it is not an issue.

Sub,

I too would be willing to show my appreciate for a working OSD for XCard and Media MVP. I definitely would be willing to donate or even pay a fee for those plugins.

Jeff has got back to me with the description of the interface. The interface it self is pretty straight forward, but there is one problem. Sage already has the XCard directshow filter in use, so I'm not able create an instance of it. I could implement this plugin, but it would require Sage to be set to not use XCard - meaning you'd have a choice of video with no OSD, or OSD with no video...

I've PM'd Jeff to ask him if there is any way for me to get a reference to the instance of the filter that Sage is holding.

There will almost certainly be overscan, and if it's because of your TV, then the sides will still be blurry. It should essentially be the same as if you set your Radeon to 1920x1080 or 1280x720.
