Prevent User from Sage Menu Access?

Has anyone either tried or figured out a way to prevent users from directly accessing the SageTV menu system?

I'm launching Sage directly into the Sage Recordings menu and I'd like to prevent people from returning to the "previous" sage menu by pressing the left arrow key.

Or, does anyone know how to remove menu choices listed in a particular menu? I know this can be done with studio but that's not an option for me so any help would be appreciated.

thanks-
fodder

what i've been doing is using nielm's custom interface and editing the menu.xml file that came with it. when i found that file, then i figured that i could simply edit it to make a bunch of changes to at least some of the menus to rearrange somethings, to also remove somethings, to rename somethings, and that i didn't have to wait for studio to become available to everyone. you might want to look at that and see if you can edit it for whatever you want to do.

well, ruel, i did it! thanks for the tip. i did not realize that nielm's customizations were nice little modules that could be imported without totally reconfiguring my sagetv setup.

i backed up my sage files and installed the Customizeable Main Menu module, put together by nielm (thanks nielm, it rocks.) i now have a nice main menu that lists only the options i need: Recordings, TV Guide, Watch Live TV, DVD, and a link for the Setup Menu. this will vastly improve my G.A.F.

here's the link to nielm's module that i used in case anyone needs it:

For what it's worth, I also posted a page at my website that is showing off the way SageTV looks on my system with my tweaked menu.xml file where I primarily try to confine the SageTV functions to mostly TV stuff by rearranging my menus to have menu items that I personally think are more important towards the top of the layered menu hierarchy and tried/attempted to direct the navigation through the menu layers with less vertical menu paths (and where I push a bunch of less-used functions that I still want but further down in the menus) and also removing a lot of the external functions that you may find in STVs although I kept an Imdb search function and I also added an eject DVD drive command.

hey ruel btw i've been to your site several times in the past and found it quite helpful. forgot to mention that earlier. anyhow i did nearly the same thing with nielm's customizeable menu .STV module. it's made sage so much easier to use b/c i've modified the menu.xml file to create very simple, short sage menus. anyhow you really helped me a lot. how did you add that menu option (posted on your website) "upcoming MOVIES on TV?" that isn't one of nielm's modules and i didn't think they were meant to function with other custom .stv's.

fodder, thanks for the comments. i'm personally pleased to see how the market for tv tuner cards and pvr software has been growing into a healthy niche over the years. it is so much better nowadays in terms of capabilities. and as for sagetv, i'm more than happy that nielm provided the menu.xml file that we can edit and tweak to limit the STV to whatever you want since i could do without a bunch of the external stuff that people like to have in STVs. that's a personal preference on my part since i would primarily want to do without too many complications when watching tv although i do want many of a pvr's interactive advantages. but there are extra things that i would like to see included in sagetv or an STV like a transparent overlay version of an instant messenger - for example see what the AOLTV internet TV set-top box (with software by Liberate) had which was very nice: see http://ruel.net/pc/pvrpix/aoltv-im.jpg

regarding the "upcoming movies on tv," that's really malore's "upcomming movies" option that is buried deeper in the original nielm menu.xml file. i just moved it up front to the main menu and renamed it. i previously had malore's "series premiers and specials" moved to the front main menu and had it renamed as "highlights specials and premieres" but i didn't like the hodgepodge selections that option was giving me.

of course you can get much of the same information, whether movies or whatever else, in the EPG by changing how the EPG is sorted - sagetv's EPG is the winner above all of the other EPGs found in other software.
