I finally got around to running some ethernet cable upstairs and re-connected my MVP in our bedroom. Thank you so much for your efforts, this thing is fantastic! It works great for me and I have noticed no issues. Thank you!

I'm an occasional Sage user, even more infrequent MVP user, but I own a MVP and decided to get it running if I could.

Here is my problem, though. I upgraded to the Sage v3 and got the new MVP client V1.3.0. At least I think I upgraded...they seemed to install, but I guess I'm not sure if I put the files in the right places.

Anyway, this is the error that I get.

The service appears to be running, but the client apparently won't connect.

The MVP itself gets stuck on "failed to connect to the GUI server"

I poked around and found a log file with this entry in it:
Sat 8/20 16:50:15.145 Error establishing server connection of:java.io.IOException: The SageTV Client & Server must be using the same version of the software.
Your server is running 3.0.7.37 and this client is running 2.2.6

But I don't know if that means the MVP client or a SageTv client???

Any thoughts on how to proceed? Do I just uninstall everything and start again?

FYI, I plan to use only the MVP to watch shows -- ie, I'm not watching using a video card at all. So I think that using the Sage service is what I want, right?

thanks
Matt

The SageTV Client has the wrong version (the one you installed the MVP Client into). It should have the same version as the SageTV Server (V3.0.7.37).

OK, thanks. This is probably an obvious fix for some -- but can you quickly point out what the correction would be?

D'l the SageTv client v3 and install it into the MediaMVP directory?

thanks

Matt,
When you upgraded to Sage V3 did you also upgrade to SageClient V3? My guess is that's where your problem is. Either that, or you got bit by the default folder change in the V3 installers.

Well, I went ahead and deleted my Frey directory and started from scratch.

(Guess I'll just have to watch the stuff that I did have recorded as an imported video, right? I backed up the directory first, but I'm not sure which files I'd need to copy back in)

Now once I run 'StartMVPclient' I can at least get a UI to come up without an error. I haven't fully tested it, but it seems to work OK.

However, the MediaMVP still won't connect. It "loads the application" but never gets past the 'locating GUI servers'.

Any thoughts on what the problem here might be? This is very frustrating - especially since I've now worked on this for >8hrs today. Aghh.....

Thanks again for the help.

Matt

I just started from scratech as well, but I threw my WIZ.BIN file (and custom usbuirt file for a Sat box I have) Thats all you really need to keep your old recordings organized. I got rid of my SAGE.PROPERTIES file cause it was loaded with old STV settings and there is nothing Super important in it. The main SAGE BRAIN is the WIZ.BIN and it just goes in your SAGETV folder.

Did you ever have the MVP Client (or the Hauppauge Software) working with your setup? Any obvious errors in the mvp\mvp_0.log logfile? If not, do you have the required firewall ports open?

I had a similiar problem. My problem was that I was using on old version of Java. When I upgraded to the new one it worked.

Yes, I have had it working with the MVP software before I upgraded to Sage v3. I'll check the mvp_0.log when I get home and see what it says. I didn't explicitly open any firewall ports when I had it working before...would you think that I'd need to do it now? I'll certainly check that, but I just assumed that if it worked before that it'd work now.

I do have Java 1.5.0 I think, but I'll update it too once I get home tonight.

Thanks again for the help.

Well, still no joy.

I upgraded my Java, just to be sure.

I wasn't running a firewall on the host computer (couldn't remember if I had turned on the XP firewall or not - I hadn't). I turned off the firewall on my network router too.

Here is my mvp/mvp_0.prop file. Any hints?

Matt

Where to Install SageTV Client?

Matt,

When running the SageTV Client install (v2.2.8) on my SageTV server machine, where should I install the client?

I want to make sure I don't mess up my functioning SageTV server machine.

Thanks,

-Kevin

Just use a completely separate directory.

I am using 2.28 and thinking of upgrading to 3.0 so I can record HD OTA. Will the MVP client play the hd shows over a wired network. I dont care if they dont play the show in HD as my TVs where the client is connected are not HDTV's

Using a crossover cable

Hi Matt, wanted to clear something up. Is it possible to use a crossover cable to connect the MVP client directly to a PC (similar to Hauppauge s/w)? I believe in the past the answer was no, but saw some mention on your site about fixedip in MVP props...

Yep, sorry. No support for visualizations (I don't get at them to start with).

Yep, the MVP should work fine with a crossover cable. If you have Java 1.5, you don't even have set the fixed IP in most cases. The crossover cable connection works best if you set a fixed IP on the LAN interface of the PC (the auto-IP assignment of Windows is pretty slow).

Try it and you'll know. If it doesn't work, have a look a mvp\mvp_0.log and it should tell you what's wrong.

Thanks for that. As per the Hauppauge manual, should the fixed IP on the NIC (PC) be 192.123.1.1, or does it not matter. Also, would the presence of a wireless adapter (connecting to the router/LAN) interfere with this? I have tried a direct connection (have java >1.5) and have not gotten anything to light up on the PC or MVP.

The IP doesn't really matter as long as it doesn't fall into a reserved range, it's subnet address doesn't collide with another in your network and the IP is unique in your network. I always use IPs reserved for private networks (e.g. 192.168.x.x).

If you don't get a physical connection, you probably have a cable or NIC setup problem.
