Specifying a limit on a hdd when there isn't that much space free.. still not working

I've just moved over to a new tv hdd, reformatted at 64k clusters etc...

I allocated a size but then inadvertenly used up 10gig of the drive.. basically SageTV just stopped recording when it ran out of space... this has happened before... I know ok... if you set an amount on a drive make sure its free.. but i'd hope it to handle it.. especially seeing as crashes, updates... or ok moving files into the dir can move them to the errant folder... which seems exempt from the file size calculations even tho its in the same dir... this can all make you run out of space compared to the limit you set...

Thanks

I have mine setup to always leave 5GB free space and seems to work ok. I do mean "ok" because sometimes it has just given up on recording instead of deleting old files and i've had to delete them manually
