Closed Caption support in SageTV?

Can anyone tell me when SageTV will have native closed caption support? I've read the threads about the various workarounds for CC support but I'd really like to see it built into SageTV natively. I'm building aHTPC using PVR-250 tuner cards and I'd like to use SageTV but I need CC support.

See "Appendix K: Closed Captions" at the end of the v2.1 manual. That is the current 'experimental' CC support that is built into SageTV. There has been no word on when that might be extended to be "official and supported".

I followed the instructions in Appendix K and got closed captioning working on the first try.

I have a 250 MCE and added the "cc_option_enabled=true" to the sage.properties file, but I never get the "caption" option when replaying a video. Yes, I restarted both the service and the app (even rebooted) before making these test recordings.

What video settings (encoder, etc) should I be trying--I understand it doesn't work w/ all settings.

Also, I made the same change on one of my Sage Clients, and it shows the option, but doesn't allow me to change it from "off." Could that be because it knows that the recording has no cc?

Thanks

It doesn't work with all decoders. It works with the NVidia decoder (I can't wait til they turn their e-store back so that I can do something about my expired demo) but it hasn't worked with some others.

What does it work with / how can I confirm they're being encoded?

Thanks.

Everybody tells me that, but so far I'm completely in the dark about what *will* work. Should I get NVidia's decoder? It doesn't work w/ Sage's or Intervideo's?

Does anyone have an idea why my server doesn't even show the option when replaying, but my client shows the option--with the only choice being "off"? I'm guessing that means that the server hasn't even recognized the cc_option_enabled setting (ie it's neither recording nor offering to display the cc's), while my client sees the option, but knows that each of these mpegs (from the server) actually have no cc's encoded.

That leads me to ask: is there some way for me to confirm that my Sage server is actually seeing te option and is instructing the card to encode cc? Asit stans now, there are just too many variables; with no way to introduce some knowns/constants, I could be guessing forever.

NVidia doesn't resolve it

I just tried the NVidia decoder and I get the same results (the option appears, but I can't select anything other than off). I suspect the cc's aren't being encoded at all. Thoughts on how to check/rectify that, anyone?

DVD Special 2?

They talk about setting the quality to "DVD Special 2" or type 14.

Is this something I need to do? If so, how?

Thanks

That are the best instructions available for enabling CC's on the PVR cards. An important note is that any of the DVD recording profiles will work if the registry settings are there.

About the nVidia decoder, the decoder itself will allow CC's to work, but the post processor will not.

Intervideo's decoders do work with CC's.

If you want to verify that CC's are being encoded, run a program called mpg2srt (available here) on the mpeg. If the files it creates have the captions, then you are set up correctly.

Still nothing - can't get 250 to encode CC

I added the InsertCCInDvd keys in the two places I found EnableVIMProtection and recorded manually with WinTVCap (I changed the DVD format to use output type 14 and specified that format when recording). I then ran mpg2srt against the file and got an empty srt.

Thoughts? Is there some setting/key I'm missing somewhere? I have a 250 MCE (that also supports CC, right?).

Jere
I can see the CC when I run the above program.. does show analyzer automatically find and use the CC in the .mpg file, or do I need to do something else?

Thanks!
