Nvidia DVD Decoder Settings

Since installing a new Nvidia FX 5500 I've now notice the per pixel adaptive deinterlacing setting. Using this effectively illiminates the jumpy image problem I have with any other option. While this is great and the quality is very good, I'm having another problem. There seems to be lots of white dots appearing at random around the edges of certain things on the screen. It looks like over sharpening however my sharpening setting in the display card driver is off. These dots dissapear when not using adaptive deinterlacing.

I've been playing with the quality settings in the display card drivers to attempt to find a solution. So my question is two fold. First, what settings in the display card drivers quality section would have a good benifit to VMR 9 redering and not have any negative performance hits. Also, what can I do about these white dots bouncing around the edges of text and ticker bars? Does anyone else see these?

Thanks!

With that card, I probably wouldn't mess with settings, I run 2xQ AA and 16x Aniso, but that's on a 6800. With regard to the dots, what video drivers are you running?

I'm running the beta 71.20

I haven't really been messing with those settings, I was more reffering to the "image settings" and perhaps the "hardware acceleration" setting...

Basically I'm not looking to get better quality over performane, I'm just looking to get smooth playback without adverse noise and jerky playback.

And you're using the 1.00.68 decoders?

As for decoder settings I run:
Hardware Accelleration - Yes
De-Interlace Control - Smart
De-Interlace Method - VMR Pixel Adaptive

And don't mess with anything else.

If you're running all of the above, you may want to give the official 67.03 drivers a try.

Yeah I've got the new version... I was actually talking about those settings in the drisplay driver "performance & Quality settings"

Although I've got the same settings as you in the Nvidia decoder... But Pixel adaptive seems to be ususeable because of this blocking, over sharpening? problem on the edges... Verticle stretch doesn't have this problem, however it's not as good looking as per pixel adaptive.

Where do you get those drivers? \

The Nvidia site has ony the 66.93 as official. I think I have a huge problem with the 66.93 (running a 6600GT AGP) because my playback is extremeley jerky with lots of color blocks on motion (only when using non nVidia decoder, like Moonlight). But I can't get the icon to appear on my server (6600GT w/66.93 drivers).. I can get the icon with the 61.xx drivers on my 5200 on the client, if you believe that.

Is this one better than the 67.03?

P.s. just found that sight after some research... I have an SiS chip on my MB, so this could be a big part of the problem.

Can't really say... I just got my fx 5500 and installed the 71.20... I only really noticed a couple menu differences. It may be different for your card though. The 71.22 and 71.24 would not work properly for me.

Good luck, I hope it's not your MB chipset!

The 1.00.67's are available from nVidia, I don't think there's a .68 version.

FWIW, I'm not sure the 71.24s are ready for prime time, I just reloaded my HTPC and put those on and I'm haveing issues I didn't have with the 67.03s.

Have you tried the 71.20, I had some issues with the 71.24 that were not present in the 71.20 version.

I'm really not able to tell exactly what modifying the driver quality settings affects. Probably because I'm only outputting to a SDTV. There seems to be a slith slowdown with the UI on the max quality setting, maybe.

When I close Sage and reload (after Windows bootup), the blocky, jumpy video goes away. But the first atempt with Sage doesn't look good (w/Moonlight and D-Scaler). Very strange... Not sure if that's driver related... I think I'll try going back to 67.03 just to be safe with the driver though.

Hey Wheemer did you ever find a fix to this? I have the same thing going on.

I have text that is 'bouncy' as if the AA is going crazy and it doesnt know where to put the edge. And I have borders (like on a news cast inset window) with dots, etc... Almost over sharp maybe like you mentioned??

Its definitely aggervating!

Unfortunately I wasn't able to find a solution to the "oversharp" white dots around the edges of stuff... I'm just living with it. It's not something specific to Sage as I see it in any PVR application.

As for the jumpiness, it was totally gone, never to be seen again, once I was able to use pixel adaptive deinterlacing. Is that an option for you? What video card do you use?

The white crap seems to get less if I keep my recording quality high.

Hmmm... Well Im using a ATI Radeon 9550 currently with the nVidia DVD Decoder.

I've been playing with my anti-aliasing, Aniso and Mipmap settings all week. I can't decide on which setup I like.

I have my nVidia setup with

Hardware Accelleration - Yes
De-Interlace Control - Smart
De-Interlace Method - VMR Pixel Adaptive

just like Stanger, I was using 'Automatic' for deinterlace control, but switching the two didnt seem to do anything...

Another issue I get with this decoder is what appears a fine layer of grainy'ness over the whole image. Hard to explain, it's not unsharp, and it's not grainy, but it appears as if there is a fine fine layer of tissue paper (but clearer) over the whole image.

Does anyone know what happened to NVidia? Their 30 day down for remodeling at the store was a LONG time ago. Something must be terribly wrong.

You said it! My 30 trial expired a LONG time ago and I have been unable to purchase the dvd decoder. I've emailed NVidia but...no reply. I really wish they would get back up, the decoder I am using is nothing compared to the NVidia one.
