Why does WMP look better than Sage?

I'm running Sage (2.2 beta) with the 'offical' nvida codec...

The colors in general look sort of washed out,and the black is more like a grey.

'Time for calibration', I think to myself...but then I watch the EXACT SAME mpeg in windows media player (10)--and the colors are brighter and the blacks are blacker...

What gives?

In sage, I'm using 'default' for all the interlacing, etc. and have chosen Nvidia as my codec...

Since WMP uses just the defaults (or so I think)...I expected the two images to look the same. Am I missing something?

thanks,

rwc

WMP may be using the overlay or 'default' video renderer...
Sage uses VMR9 renderer by default, which gives you nice semi-transparent OSD, but on some video cards looks washed-out...

Try disabling 3dAccelleration, and switching video renderer to Overlay or default...

Hmmm...I tried all the hardware and 3d accelerator stuff...and it still looks washed out.

When I switch it from 'VRM9' to Overlay, sage crashes (so I don't think I should do that! ;P )

Any other ideas on what I should check out? Or am I pretty much SOL?

thanks!

you could check to see if hardware acceleration is enabled in the nvidia decoder. Start playback of a recording in SageTV in window mode. Right click on the nvidia icon that appears in your systray. Chose decoder properties. Check to see if the hardware acceleration box is checked.
