Can I get program info back after a Wiz.bin corruption?

Seems I've got a weird problem with my HTPC. Things rarely work as expected when I make changes, but often seem to work the next day. I've never experienced something like this before, guess it's just got an attitude.

Anyway, in addition to this oddity, I seem to get an abnormally high number of Wiz.bin corruptions, like maybe every couple of weeks or so. I usually make backups, but often lose some programs from Sage, although the actual files are still there, sage doesn't see them anymore since the wiz.bin is older than the recording. Is there any way to get this info back into Sage, aside from recording it again if it airs a second time?

The detailed show info is only in wiz.bin, so it that is gone, so is the listing data. If the airing isn't too old (a day or 2), it might be in the EPG when it updates for an old wiz.bin. I'm not entirely sure about this aprt: I think the latest beta is supposed to be able to match a recording file with its EPG data, _if_ the EPG data for its airing is found. (That's what that long number on the recording filename should be for -- marks the EPG data location/airing for the show.) Also, there is at least one utility to backup your config files -- check the utilities index in this forum.

But, the real issue is that you shouldn't be getting corrupted wiz.bin files in the first place. (I'm still using the one I started with around Oct 2003.) I would look into just what is causing your computer to do this, whether there is a problem with SageTV, other software, drivers, hardware failures, or even power issues.

To do that it might be helpful to know what exactly causes a corrupt wiz.bin. Is is a abnormal exit from sage that does this? Anything else that has been know to corrupt the files?

I have had OS crashes (BSOD), power failures, disk failures and Sage crashes, and have not yet had a corrupt wiz.bin! However I may have been lucky!

This is the reason for wiz.bak: I believe sage makes a backup copy of wiz.bin before writing any changes, so that if the write causes wiz.bin to be corrupt, it automatically falls back to wiz.bak.

This is also the reason for backing up both (in your other thread.
