That's a weird message to be receiving. Try reinstalling Java as well as reinstalling the SageTVClient. ClassFormatErrors indicate a corruption in the JAR files that have the compiled program code.

Unable to start client

I installed the client a few days ago and it was working great.

Yesterday, however, I pointed my SageTV machine at a music library that was apparently a bit too large (I've seen some other posts indicating there is a problem with this). I had to shut down and restart the server machine and remove the reference to that directory to get the SageTV machine to start working again.

Once I had done so, however, I was no longer able to start up the SageTV client. (I suppose it could be a coincidence that the client stopped working after I screwed up the server with too large of a music library, but I have no other explanation.)

The symptom is:

- I start up Sage Client
- I get the Splash Screen; the message at the bottom is "Loading Application"
- I immediately get the following messagebox:

Java Exception
java.lang.ClassFormatError: Unknown constant tag in .class file.

- I hit OK and the splash screen goes away.

I can't find any logs anywhere, actually: no .txt or .log files under c:\program files\frey technologies.

Since this started happening, I have tried to uninstall the client a few times, but this has not helped.

(Oh, one other thing changed in the meantime: the server machine's IP address has changed as well. Although I don't see how this could be affecting the client so early and besides I never checked the checkbox to tell it to connect automatically.)

Thanks

Not sure what happened; I don't know how my copy of the Sun JRE (1.4.1_02) would or could have gotten corrupted, but reinstalling it appears to have helped.

I left out one detail in my earlier message: I actually *first* noticed a problem in the client -- again, after realizing the SageTV server was hung attempting to read in a very large music library -- when I went to shut down the client after restarting the server. I right-clicked on the SageTV client icon in the tray, which brought up the menu, but when I tried to select "Exit" it did nothing. "Restore" did bring up the client UI but clicking the close box did nothing, so I ended up having to kill the process in the task manager. Again, I'm not sure how this could have screwed up the JRE itself.

(Another complicating factor may be that I have more than one VM on this system since I am a software developer myself; I realize now that when I reinstalled Sage, the installer must have run from the WebSphere 4 (1.3.1) JVM, although when the Sage Client itself runs from the start menu it does so with the Sun JRE.)

Thanks again.
