Video Renderer problems, sage locking up.

Problems:

Hauppauge WinTV2000 works fine on all monitors, picture looks soft though.

Sage TV settings answers for kny3twalker:
Default video renderer = Picture that has comb problems on moving objects. Example: someone walking across the screen looks jagged.
Video Overlay renderer = This locks up sagetv completely, have to end process.
VMR9 DX9 = Works fine on primary monitor, stutters and catches up on secondary monitors. Not acceptable as that's where the projector monitor is.

Questions from kny3twalker:
have you tried removing the older card since you put the pvr 150 in ? = Yes, never tried using them both as I don't have the free slots.
and did you get the drivers from hauppauge.com instead of using the CD drivers? = Yes, never used the CD.
have you installed a DVD decoder or the decoder included with the card? = Yes, from this file from hauppage "hcwsmd04.exe"

what are your hardware specs and what have you set the video render to? =

Machine is P4 3.0c, 1gig memory, 73gig raptor, PVR150 with remote, ATI Raedon 9700pro.

and what decoder have you select in the setup? =
Hauppauge WinTV PVR PCI II Capture TV Tuner.

One thing to look at for VMR9 is to go to the Windows Display Properties & set the other display as the primary monitor -- DirectX works best on the "primary" display.

Also, just in case... are the video card drivers up to date?

Oh -- and the "TV Tuner" on your last line is not a decoder. I believe he meant: what is in Detailed Setup on the Video tab.

I would like to use the overlay setting for the video renderer, that seemed to work best with the aver card but locks up sage with the PVR150. I don't really want to swap around the primary monitor so I guess I can't really use VMR9. And what's up with the jaggy picture with the default renderer?

The rest of the settings for video are:
MPEG2 decoder filter: Default. (available are cyberlink, intervideo noncss for hauppage, sigma designs mpeg2 hardware, ffdshow mpeg 4)
DXVA mpeg mode: Default
DXVA deinterlacing: Default
Descaler filter: disabled

More info:
XP SP2, DX9c, video drivers were latest till the new ones came out a day or two ago.

I would try choosing specific decoders to work with overlay -- and try it on the main monitor, since others have told me that overlay is not always available on the 2nd monitor (though it shouldn't result in a lock when you try it). Maybe someone else can offer more comments regarding decoders & your ATI card... I won't pretend to know too much about video cards & decoders.

I have to ask one thing, though: where is that "sigma designs mpeg2 hardware" option coming from? If it is an Xcard, you can use that in SageTV too & there is now an alpha-version plugin that can display the SageTV UI on the TV.

Good advice, I tried the cyberlink one and it works fine in overlay on the second monitor. Looks OK, I will try messing with it further.

Update: the overlay / cyberlink combo only works on the 9700. It won't work on the Matrox Milenium II that I have for the third monitor. But I guess that's ok though.

The "sigma designs mpeg2 hardware" is bogus, I don't have the hardware but it was required to install sonic senarist.
