I changed my decoder back to FFDSHOW and turned on deinterlacing while pointing it at the DScaler4 directory and selecting a filter. I can't tell if that is actually doing anything.

. You're right - if you can spend just enough money (which appears to be somewhere between $750 and $1000 currently) you can get a superior near-HD quality recorder and DVD player out of your HTPC.
I think addressing the CPU is key. As soon as these P4 3.4 or Athlon 64 3500 become more affordable, pairing one with FFDSHOW generates the best picture for me.
