System Stuttering

I got that Stuttering problem again

where the whole system was stuttering. I only noticed cause the mouse was jittering across the screen as I moved it instead of moving smoothly

I promptly rebooted the system and all seemed well but I am not sure what caused it and how to prevent it the recordings it made just before this appear to be ok so it either did not affect its ability to record (yet) or it had JUST started when I caught it

is there a way in sage to schedule an automatic system reboot once a week at say 4am or so. I want this from withing sage so it can coincide with a gap in the recording schedule and also be early morning so if for some reason the system does not restore properly there is a chance I will notice before primetime :-)

or better a fix for this problem ? there are times where the machine must run unattended for upto 2 weeks (about 16 days when we go on vacation in the summer)

Suggestions ?

Don't know, never seen that type of problem and have had my 5x encoder Sage Server up many many weeks straight without a reboot without a problem.

This may not be related to your system but I also experience the video problems you described. The root of my problem is with my hard drives. Every once in a while my Seagate 160G will down grade from UDMA to PIO Mode. When this occurs I get the poor video quality (stuttering, etc). It's a total pain in the but and I didn't realize this until after I spent a considerable amount of time re-installing Sage, etc. I've got new drivers (finally) for my mobo chipset (VIA) which I think may solve my problem long-term.

hmm novia here just because of known via issue with stuff like this

also THIS time the video it was recording came out ok (I might have caught it early) the "system" was stuttering. ie when I moved the mouse the movement was not fluid like it should have been.

I recently had an issue like this when I lost power and my sage server rebooted. Sage started up as a service and tried to record scheduled shows. When I got home from work I logged into the server and started the client. I noticed that the sagetv service process was spiking to 100% cpu every 5 seconds or so. It caused the UIRT to miss digit on one show and the other recordings from that day were worthless. I rebooted the server and everything returned to normal.

Nerys,

Do you happen to live in the philly area? I used to work with a guy named Chris Taylor a few years ago.

Yes I live in the philly area ? where did you work ?

the only other job I had in the area was at Voicenet.

I killed service mode long time ago VERY VERY unstable and this instability happened durring a session ie one hout it was fine the next it was not no reboot inbetween.

What java version are you using? A lot of people have had problems with recent releases of java sdk 1.4.x when using nonbeta's of sage.

WOW HI !! Scott as in who I got when I called noc ? if so I remember you :-)

dump or not it was paying a helluva lot better than what I am getting now :-(

java is whatever was linked to from here probably the current version

it has not done it again but then again I do not let it go over a week without a reboot just in case. leary of losing a nights worth of program to a test to find out :-)

I loathe instability so far sage has been impressively stable. its got issues and quirks some really should be fixed most are just usage differences in how I utilize sage :-) so I do not anticipate trying any other version of sage unless the newer version has something I MUST have :-) I work 7 days so no real time to play with it but if I get the time I will make another system wide image and play with a beta but again it has not done it again since then. when seasons shift ie no current shows I want are playing in quantity I will "let it run" and see how long it goes before problems arrise.

Whatever happened to voicenet ?

Nah..Scott H was in NOC. Last I heard, he was dating Carmens daughter Beth. This is Scott Ferry. I was in Systems Administration. VN was paying you better? Sorry to hear that, but I guess you guys got OT and you worked the off hours. From what Tim W tells me, they got rid of half of their employees, merged NOC and SysAdmin, and no longer do 24-7 support.

I have left it running for well over a week now and still no problems so it may have been a fluke
