It is there for specific AV equipment and associated RCs that use 56KHz IR sensors and corresponding transmitters.

You need it if you want to control an external sat box that uses 56KHz IR signals.

That is incorrect. You do *not* need it to control devices that receive signals in the 56KHz range. The "normal" USB-UIRT already has the capability to transmit at 56 KHz. It also has the ability to learn 56 KHz signals (by holding the 56KHz remote very close to the USB-UIRT).

The only case where you need the 56KHz sensor is if you want to regularly use a remote control that transmits at 56KHz to drive your USB-UIRT.

The most frequent case here would be if you love your Scientific Atlanta remote control (I think these are 56KHz) and want to use it to control SageTV. Again, this has nothing to do with the Scientific Atlanta cable box, just the remote control.

QFT, I have a cable box that uses a signal of 56kHz, I do NOT need the 56kHz reciever on my USB-UIRT. Because I was able to get the codes for my cable box from someone else on this board. Scientific Atlanta box if anyone is interested. You only need the 56kHz option if the remote you want to use to control Sage is one that transmits in the 56kHz range.
