Remote desktop control on home network?

I've searched around alittle bit, but haven't found too much on this.

I'd like to put my Sage server in the closet and be able to access the computer via a remote desktop app from another computer from within my home network.

Any thoughts on a good product to use? I don't (necessarily) need access from outside the network, and therefore it doesn't have to be a 'secure' connection by any means.

Would the XP remote desktop be a good solution?

thanks
Matt
[this of course won't help when my PVR350 freezes and requires a hard reboot, but that's another issue]

Yes, RDP will work fine. One of the VNC flavors will also work but you have to dload and install it. RDP is already there, why not use it?

The best luck? So you have had issues with RDP? Thats very strange. If he was not behind a firewall, i would say VNC, For his purposes RDP is more the ok.

I wasn't saying that RDP wouldn't be ok for his purposes.

You had mentioned VNC so I was just throwing it out there that I've had the best luck with VNC. No need for username/Password if you don't want it. I wasn't even sure if you could get RDP to accept a connection without an account. I've only used it on an AD network, and never tried to get it down to anonymous (no auth) access.

hi,

using realvnc here as well - I have experimented with remote desktop as well and its performance is a bit better than realvnc however I found that if I closed the session that my screen showed the login screen rather than the screen where I left.

I'm by no means a remote desktop power user so I couldn't find out how to overcome this one - probably I should have defined an additional user or so but if I remember right: when I finished the remote session it sort of logs out and showed the login screen.

realvnc seems to be less intrusive - you 'take over' the desktop and when you leave it stays as it was.

I use RDP also and have the same issue with it logging you out on the local machine. It does not matter if you use a different account or not.

I really should change to a VNC flavor as RDP is frustrating.

As stated by others in this thread, RDP will log out the current user. So if you have a TV hooked up to your sage machine, it will be stuck at the windows login screen after you use RDP. VNC doesn't log out the current user.

thanks for the ideas. I tried the RDP and found out - as others have said - that it logs you out. I'll try the VNC and see how it goes.

have a good weekend

I also use RealVNC to access my server in my server room...

Remote Desktop via Netmeeting?

It has been a while since I tried it, but can't you take over the client dektop using remote desktop as called by/through netmeeting? There are probably a bunch of security reasons why this is not a good way of doing it (if possible in the first place). I also seem to remember that there was a problem with Sage having the focus if you connected...

XP only allows 1 account logged on when using RDP. If you specify the same username/password as the account already logged onto the SageTV server, it won't log you off. Use the disconnect button or close the window to leave the account logged on at the server.

If you can, run SageTV as a service. Then you don't need to have a Windows user account logged on for Sage to work.

There are local policy entries that can make Remote Desktop NOT log out the current user. I use it at work this way. Let me look through our engineering departments notes and I will publish
