Silent HTPC
Just did a little project to silence my HTPC Client that is in an entertainment center. Results so good thought I would share.
I bought some 9 db silenx fans and installed two in my power supply, one case fan, one for the stock CPU hs, a thermaltake vga heatpipe and a passive cooler for the NB. First time I powered up, with the cover off, I thought I broke the power supply, untill I heard the hard drive and cd rom spin up and then checked each fan, simply amazing. However, once all together and the entertainment center closed the CPU got up to 64c, it's an AMD 1400. So I bought an AeroCool HT 101 CPU heat sink and the temps went down to 44c. My previous setup the CPU would get up to 60c, but usually around 58c. The Aerocool is nice for a HTPC destop case, 3 heat pipes, all copper tower design and wide spaced fins. The cpu fan blows sideways and straight into the power supply intake fan and seems to help the air flow of the whole case. The fan that came with the HT 101 is said to be "super silence" but is very loud in comparison, so I ordered a 14db 80mm silenx that will fit it. The fans cost a bit more, but very good stuff. |

Here is my "Silent HTPC". I replaced the power supply with a Zalman 300 Silent. Almost unheard, except if you are within a foot of the backside. Replaced the CPU Cooler with a Zalman 6000 "Flower" cooler w/92mm fan and a "Fanmate" set to minimum. Finally the noisy 60mm case fan was replaced with a Directron "Silent" 80mm with a 60/80mm adapter. I run the fan at full voltage because while it is silent, it does not blow alot of air. Actually about as much as the noisy 60mm at 60% using Speedfan. Temps @ 80F (26.6C) @ 100% humidity are CPU=125F (51.6C) and Motherboard=113F (47C). At a more normal 70 F (21C) and lower humidity I usually run about CPU=117F (47C) with the motherboard temps staying about the same. Temps are reported by SpeedFan.
My system config is in my sig.
