Playback problems/question

I've got a problem that has be stumped.

When I set my video renderer to overlay, or VMR it does not play. I just get pink garbage on the screen, but audio is fine. If I change the video renderer to default it plays just fine. Now I thought there was only overlay, and VMR, so what is default doing?

thanks,

There are Overlay, VMR7 and VMR9, on XP, VMR7 is "default".
