I think that if you plan on archiving with compression you should start with the best quality possible. I use Max Mpeg recording which is 12mbit/s and then run that through AutoGK at 300MB/hr. Then use VirtualDub to cut out commercials. I know it takes longer to encode with the commercials in there but it is way easier to take commercails out of avi than it is with mpeg.
For Movies from Pay Channels I use Nero Digital AVC Standard at about 230MB/hour which gives me better quality then Xvid at 300MB/hr.

Just my two cents

Not if you buy VideoReDo... Never been easier taking comercials out. Especially if you use comskip, and it generates the project files for VideoReDo.

Best money I ever spent for commercvial removal.

Import project, adjust commercial start/stop as needed, cut them out (in seconds because it doesn't need to reencode the MPEG).
