Problem moving Recordings to a new Drive

Well, I have successfully done this in the past but can't seem to get the new recordings to show up. I am trying to move my recordings to a networked drive. Here is what i have done:

1. Mapped the networked drive as S:
2. Created a new video library folder in sage pointing to S:sagerecordings(networked drive)
3. Closed sage completely
4. Moved my recordings over to S:sagerecordings (tried both cutting and also copying)
5. Restart sage---now if i just copied the files over to the new drive they still show up in recordings but they still point to the old path. Once i remove the original file location--they no longer show up but DO show up in the imported videos section. Wierd since I do not have the folder specified as an 'import' folder.

I have also tried doing this:
1. Removing all import and library directories from sage
2. Creating new video library folder in sage pointing to S:sagerecordings
3. close sage
4. move recordings over to new mapped location
5. restart---now none appear anywhere

I think the first option I tried is what is supposed to be done. I took that off the FAQ and I remember correctly doing this in the past-just not with networked drives. Any help would be great because once I do this I plan on installing everything to a new computer but want to make sure i can get this working first.
Thanks
JUC

When you say that you "Created a new video library folder", do you mean a video recording directory? From other comments, it looks like that's what you mean instead of Library Import Dir, but I want to make sure.

You aren't trying to use that mapped drive while using service mode, are you? (The files probably wouldn't even be added to the library if you were, but I wanted to check.) Perhaps try UNC paths instead.

Check the FAQ about this again, particularly the comment someoen received from tech support near the end. There are so many variables that I've just about given up trying to figure out why this does or doesn't work. I suggest using at least v2.2.8, though. When I move files, I've been able to simply close SageTV completely, move the recordngs, & restart SageTV. Oh - when you remove the original file location, don't remove the directory fro the drive nor remove the drive letter/UNC path itself.

Recordings have to be on the same drive letter they were before you moved them.
In other words, if they were recorded to d: your mapped drive has to have the letter d: assigned to it. There is no way around this, as the recording information is embedded in the SageTV Database.

In the case where you are moving them and Sage to a new computer, just make sure, like above, they end up on the same drive letter as on the old machine.

... except that I've moved recordings to new drive letters & UNC paths w/o a problem. When recordings are found in a new video recording dir location & are no longer in the old location (the old location must still be visible to SageTV, though), the complete path is updated in the database.

hmm, I'm kind of stumped still and really need to migrate these files bad as my drive is starting to go. I believe i have been doing everything I am supposed to do. No service, and yes andy--created new video recording directory. close completely, move files and nothing---they all just end up in the import videos section. I too have done this in the past with different drive letters (not for complete migration of system but for just moving recordings) and it worked fine. Should now too. Oh yea, i have tried with 2.2.8 and 3.0X beta. same results. I'll try UNC paths when I get home but I believe I origianlly tried that first. Anyone else have problems and were able to get this working?
Thanks,
JUC

edit---I also tried the suggestion by a forum member too---that was my option 2 posted in the first link....same results

Ahh, yes UNC's, I forgot about those, cause I don't use them, but I didn't know you could have the database update itself like that. So my bad.

I'm going to install a new drive and would like to migrate my recording directory onto the new drive. Basically I want to have a drive dedicated to data and move my recordings off my OS drive.

Do I understand you correctly that I can just add the new recording directory in the sage properties file and move the files--and the database will automatically updaate itself? Do I need to do anything to kick off the update?

Can I actually just change the recording directory (ie not add a new one, but change it to the new one)? I'm assuming this would be ok as long as I've moved the files first; is it?

Thanks!

I just tried this with the 4.1.1 beta.

I have some videos in c:\documents....\my videos that I wanted to move to //sage-server/sagetv

stopped sage server.
moved the files.
started sage server
looked at details and saw that the database still pointed to the old are.
stopped sage server again
closed sage gui
restarted sage server
restarted sage gui
checked again and they were all updated.

Maybe something like this would work?
