EPG data - minor updates?

Hi All,

At present I use XMLTV, ripped once a night from the Radio Times website and imported into SageTV at 3 in the morning. However, I may get access to a better source of data, and one that updates very regularly (in the UK things like cricket can really screw the schedule up during the day). However, I don't want SageTV to lock up whilst it imports 14 days worth of data about 60 channels every 15 minutes!

So is it possible to do a small update to EPG data in Sage? Just the things that have changed, rather than everything? Grateful for any thoughts; I'm going to go through the code for the XMLTV pugin myself and see if I can come up with anything.

Neilm, Just to be clear here, are you saying that sage will throw away any programs which were in previous epg updates but not in the current one?

I mean there is no way to trigger a mechanism that does a small incremental EPG update with XMLTV separately to the full update.

I don't know what happens if you create an epgdata.xml file containing just the delta's and trigger a full update...

I thought that it replaced the current EPG DB items with what it gets from the .xml file, but having never tested it, who knows!

(edit: a quick test looks like I was wrong, and it keeps the old data and loads the changes, but care must be taken with overlaps -- old programmes overlapping the updated ones are removed...)

OK, so it looks like it could be done but you'd need to be flipping sure that you had got your data right... and of course you'd need to find a way to trigger it. Updating Sage.properties on the fly? But Sage doesn't ick up changes to the properties file unless it's not running, does it? My recollection is that there's no property to change the frequency of EPG updates.

Thanks for doing the test nielm - I'm away from my Sage PC for awhile so can't try it!

you can trigger it via the webserver (there is a Force epg update link on the home page) or via disabling/enabling a channel in the source setup.

Great - that would be relatively easy to script. Thanks!
