What is a network encoder ?

I been doing some reading about having two separate sagetv servers in my home and how to get them to see each other and record. And I been seeing the term "network encoder" used.

what is a "Network Encoder" and what does it do?

Thanks

A Network encoder is an encoder card that sits on the network, external to the sage server.
I.e. if I have no slots left on my sage server to add capture cards and no USB capture devices, I would need to have a second server running sage recorder to hold my additional network encoder cards. Typically, the machine running SageTV is the "master", the machine running SageRecorder is the "slaved" to the master, and all the SageClient machines connect to the "Master" machine to receive the video streams.
