VMR9 or Overlay?

Just curious. I can't get VMR9 to offer smooth playback no matter what I try with my 6600 GT, and I just saw a similar comment from someone who's tried three different ATI cards. So I'm just wondering how many people actually use VMR9 with success, and if so, what their setup is.

Oh, and I'd like to limit this to people viewing HD content.

I too am having issues with VMR9, but I'm dealing with it for now, until I have some extra time to get FSE to work. The NVIDIA codecs aren't an option for me as I'm still running Windows 2000. If it ain't broke...

Overlay isn't horrible though...

VRM9, Nvidia decoder, ATI 9700 Pro, no, repeat no FSE. Nice and smooth.

VMR9, no FSE. Cannot get FSE to work no matter what I've tried.

Did you guys ever get FSE & VMR9 to work before v81.85? This is probably my problem. I've been too lazy to keep up on my gfx drivers lately.

It's worked for me since the get-go. I was running 70 series drivers up until yesterday.

Overlay and FSE VMR9, nVidia 1.02-177, Geforce 6600GT Forceware 81.85.

Everything just works. No problems whatsoever.

Does anyone know the difference between Purevideo 1.02-150 and 1.02-177? I just upgraded.

I also upgraded my Detonator driver from 77.77 to 81.85

Everything seems to work very nicely.

Okay, you guys are killing me!

I just updated the Nvidia drivers, and tried to install the new purevideo drivers, but they show as expired due to a prior trial of a prior version.

I bought SageTV to try this beta, not knowing it would work, and I'm glad I did. But somehow I have a problem popping for less money to buy software from the company I bought my video card from. Since it didn't work betther than other options before, I'm very reluctant to buy, especially given some of the reports of how bad the purchase process is through Nvidia.

I've never been able to get FSE to function properly. When FSE is enabled in the Detailed Setup screen, all is well. PQ is great. Jump out of fullscreen mode and everything still works. Toggle back to full screen and Sage locks up tight. I've tried both the nVidia 6600 GT and ATI 9700 Pro, same problem. Sage is certainly aware of the problem, but I'm wondering if it might be something else, something Sage can't fix. Maybe the motherboard chipset implementation, AGP bus, etc.

Let Sage know, maybe it is.

FSE has never worked well for me with Sage regardless of video driver or decoder. The best I could get would be to start Sage in full screen and never switch to window ever. If I do it dies.

Thought I did, guess I'll try again.

I just wonder if the problem(s) isn't more to do with other aspects of the HTPC, not the Sage software. Kinda like how some are more successful with one video card than another. Never one to give MS any credit, but MCE gained it's reputation as a 'closed' box, like Apple. Now that the MCE software is available, problems are popping up with the various hardware configurations being used.

Maybe Sage should start a "certification" program. Hey, I'd help. Just send me all the latest hardware, I'll test it !

I have a 6600GT card, and I also watch transport streams with my setup with absolutely no problems playing them back using VMR9 and FSE modes engaged.

I wonder what hardware your system is based on?

My motherboard is an ASUS P5P800 with a 3 GHZ cpu and 1 Gig of ram. Nothing much special about it, and hyperthreading is not turned off. My system default settings are used in Sage and I use the Nvidia pure decoders. I've used all the releases up to the current 8x.xx series. Current drivers for everything, nothing is dated. My transport steam is recorded by MyHD card for what it's worth.

I do have one issue that I'll post elsewhere about file naming issues.

Except for the model motherboard, it's pretty much the same. I have an Asus AV8 Deluxe with an AMD 3.0+ and one gig of ram. I'm not using the Nvida decoders, however, as noted in a subsequent thread.

Also, I can play back MyHD card files from SageTV, but I don't really notice a difference playing back those files from files created by Sage. The main problem is with playing files that are currently recording.

VMR9. ATI x700 Pro It took alot of tweaking to get it solid (WinDVD 7 or Intervideo ATI) Mpeg-2 Max Quality. The built in ones work without issue for the most part but they have issues with some mpeg files I play. Back when I had a 9600 non pro I still used vmr9 but only on a lower res and even then although I didnt realize it until I got the x700 it was blurry for what it was compared to overlay.

The tweaks I used was 1. Nvidia mainboard (every single VIA board I used coudn't keep up IDE/SATA wise past DVD standard play) 2. Moving the swap file to a separate drive or the same drive as the video drive 3. Hard drives with at least 8m of cache. 4. Turning off last access in NTFS and tweaking the way windows pages (no higher than equal on ATI systems, or you will corrupt the install of windows!) I also had to tweak the DXVA mode (using D, but it changes depending on what tv you use)

If I recall all they really added was support for the new GF 7 cards and I think with the 81.85 or better drivers it added an additional deinterlace option with 6600+ cards. I used to use nvidia's purvideos but I found that after a few weeks I would get a crash which I thought was Java not clearing memory but was actually something with their codecs.
