New 4.0 crashes every 24hrs - thoughts?
I recently upgraded to the new 4.0 version from the various 3.x betas, and finally 4.0. The system crashes with the following error every day, usually about 20-24 hrs from when I last restarted Sage. It has always been more or less stable through 2.x.x., some of the beta's were less stable at first but a little manipulation of the display and audio settings usually corrected this. I have noticed that before it finally crahses, it begins to get slow. Also, the system complains about being low on disk space on my C drive which has 11GB free. All video and such is stored on a different drive. Memory leak?

Its been 48 hrs and no crash- I think that did it! I'll put that on my upgrade checklist!

The decualt installation of Sage 4.0 use the My Videos folder on my C drive with the OS. This explains why I had the disk space warning previusly. That helped for one 48 hr period, then a crash. Now I'm back to crashing every 24hrs.
Error AppName: sagetv.exe AppVer: 2.0.0.1 ModName: jvm.dll ModVer: 5.0.50.5 Offset: 0000aaa4 While looking on my Sage recording drive- I found a 38GB seinfeld episode. This just happens to be directly after the simpsons episode I last recorded before finding it crashed after work. It looks as if Sage continued recording the channel I was on last and never stopped. While the rich feature set of vesion 4.0 is very cool, it never crashed this frequently before the upgrade. Any other thoughts as to how to fix this? |

Did you ever get this resolved? I've notice Sage crashing on my server overnight pretty much every night since I upgraded to 4.0. I am running in server mode on a headless server which makes it hard to identify the failure. How does one turn on the logging in Sage?
I have also been running an MPV off of this machine, but am experimenting with not running that to see if the situation improves. |

Are you running any commercial skipping apps by chance?

Well, it crashed again last night even without the PVR application running. Now I'm starting to run out of options. Anyone know how to get a log file? |

I run in service mode and it is only the UI part that crashes. Every night at around 9pm (give or take an hour). My system is newly re-installed from scratch, but it was doing the same before the re-install. |

What time does your channel guide get updated? Could there be an issue with that?

My EPG updates at around 21:15, but My system has crashed both before and after the update occurs.

Mine usually crashes (embarrassingly) when people are around!
I think that there is a kind of 'showing off' bug happening. |

I am not sure whether it will help, but my continous sage crashes were the result of memory problems.
You could try downloading Memtest and running it, or in the BIOS turn your memory settings from auto to a low speed. Once I did this I went from crashing 3 or 4 times a day to being very stable. I even survived England winning at the rugby without a crash; good job as I had friends round. |

It is good (and bad) to hear I am not the only one experiencing this. While my crashes have not been in front of any company, they have been right at the worste moments during a near real time show. I too experience the 8:30pm to 9:30pm crash window but my viewing time of 8pm to 12 pm may play a part in that. Aside from this problem, the new Sage 4.0 is everything I was hoping for and then some.
I found that leaving the UI awake and timeshifting will crash SageTV right around 24hrs every time. This also results in a huge mpeg file of 15 GB to 20 GB where Sage stopped renaming the file and bunched 4-8 hours of shows together as one (kinda random, not related to available space). Making sure that Sage (not xp) is in StandBy at the end of the night will prevent coming home to a crash but usually results in Sage crashing in the middle of a show. When I first built this machine, I ran PassMarks Performance Test (memory, IO, graphics, etc) on it and stored the results. Comparing them to the tests I ran tonight showed no difference. For kicks, I started SageTV in its usual application mode, started timeshifting Live TV on my Haupppauge's Tuner then ran Passmark again with suprisingly good results considering. I posted a link to the results for others if they are interested, maybe it will help lead to a resolution. What version of jav are you using? Did you try going back to v1.4.2? (See this post.)
You could contact tech support to see if they could help track down what is happening. - Andy

Thanks Andy, I submitted a trouble ticket. I was originally using JVM 1.4.2 but upgraded to 1.5 to try and solve this problem. I do not use FSE but maybe I will enable it and back off to 1.4.2 to see if it helps. thanks

I am running Java 5, not in SFE. I have problems running FSE so I don't bother. Because of this playback is not as smooth as it could be. Is there a problem with Java5 and FSE then? I may try going back to Java 1.4.2 later today and see if that has an effect. |

I wanted to close this thread with my resolution. This problem seems to have been related to upgrading from the previous version. After reinstalling Windows XP and importing my wiz.bin file, Sage 4.0 now runs flawlessly as a clean install with all the same drivers. Theres something to be said for making a bootable DVD OS image with all drivers installed, minus the application.

I'll throw my resolution on here too. It's been over a week since I found and remedied the culpret. There was an AVG update scheduled at 2:00am. I did not knowingly change anything in AVG recently. Since I disabled the scheduled events, nary a crash. I'm not really using AVG on the server, so I'll probably delete it entirely. Any comments on virus protection on a media server?
