How to measure fan sizes?

Dumb question but I need to know how PC fans are measured? Is it across the fan blades?, diagonally across the housing?, straight across? I don't know.. I need to replace a couple of noisy case fans and I have measured lots of different ways and haven't figured out the magic method..

Thanks..

Should be across the case. There would be 3 measurements length, width, and thickness, length and width should be the same and that's the measurement you want to use. It will probably be 60, 80, or 92mm.
