Analog audio for TV, spdif for DVD's

Anyone out there who has actually done this ? Several have said it can be done but I've had no luck trying various combo's of audio renderers and decoders

We would like to use Sage to watch DVD's with sdpif output to the surround sound receiver. And we want to use the rptv speakers for watching TV, requires analog stereo output.

Audio is from the mb using Realteck AC97 drivers. A sound effects application is also loaded with the drivers which allows selection of both analog and spdif outputs which is checked. However, the surround sound receiver does not detect Dolby digital, just Dolby Pro, center channel only.

IIRC with my M-Audio Revolution 7.1, if I set the card to analog mode, everything will come out the analog ports, except for DVDs which I had set to S/PDIF in the decoders, those would still get passed over S/PDIF.

Hi Stanger,

What decoders are you using and how did you set it to spdif ? I've been poking around trying to find an audio decoder that allows different settings.

I think when I noticed that I was using Sonic decoders (it was a while ago).

Oh, and I'm talking about the decoder settings themselves, not the settings in SageTV.

Sonic decoders, of course, the ones I DON'T have ! And, yes, I understand about the decoder settings. The problem is, none of the decoders I'm using seem to have any way to make changes to the settings. Or, at least, I can't find where to do it.

Ok, I'll keep searching. At least now I know it can be done. Thanks, Stanger.

I think it's got more to do with the soundcard than the decoders. But who knows. As for settings what decoders are you using? Sonic and nVidia are both pretty good with their settings, but WinDVD and PowerDVD are horrid in my experience, especially WinDVD.

You may be right about the soundcard. There's an applet that installs with the drivers for the mb sound, Abit Audio Eq (or something like that). Under the S/PDIF settings, you can select no audio, analog only, digital only, or both. And they work as expected except no Dolby D, only Pro Logic and only center channel.

With either WinDVD or PowerDVD, using the same mb sound, I get Dolby D and full surround sound. Can't tell you how many different combo's of renderers and decoders I've tried, very frustrating.

Right now, I'm using nVidia decoders. I can find the nVidia video settings but nothing for audio.

To get to audio properties panel, play some thing in WMP. If PureVideo decoder is the default one, you will get an icon in the tray. Right click on it and it should have the video as well as audio properties.

I have a similar setup and the sound output from the ASUS onboard sound processor comes out through both the analog outputs and SPDIF.

I ve used both Intervideo and Sonic Decoders with no differences so I think it is sound driver related.
