Network encoder discovery???

Does Anyone have an idea of what this is? I was just wondering if I need to adjust the code in the MyTheatre DVB Network Encoder to cater for it. Or if there are any new Network Encoder Protocol commands?

Cheers

Peter

I haven't played with this yet, so I can't provide first-hand details, but for anyone trying to configure SageTV to act as a network encoder, try the following:

1) For the installation of SageTV that is going to be the network encoder, set this property: enable_encoding_server=true. Start this installation of SageTV.

2) For the main installation of SageTV (the one that is to be the server for all your clients), set this property: network_encoder_discovery=true. Start SageTV.

I'm told that other than those 2 changes, you don't have to do any other properties file modifications.

I don't know whether this might affect your network encoder code.

This is only for when Sage is used as a network encoder. It does not work with Sage Recorder or our DVB network encoders.

Still--that makes it a WHOLE lot easier than it was in the past to set up a second instance of sage as a networked encoder!

With the network encoder discovery you also don't need to worry about mapped drives or UNC paths either.

The old network encoder protocol versions are still fully supported though (and those require mapped drives or UNC paths that match on the encoder & server)

Does this mean that you can use a PVR-150 as a network encoder in another machine, if that machine is running a full copy of Sage?

I know that Sage Recorder does not work with the PVR-150. Right now, I have two independent SageTV Servers each with its own full license and a PVR-150. It would be nice to set up the second machine as a network encoder and deal with everything through one interface.

Yes. You've been able to do that for a while now; this change just makes it easier to set up.

Can you use the 2nd copy of Sage's UI to connect to the main server? Say with the autoconnect_server_hostname in teh sage.properties for the other server copy? I guess I'll just have to try it and see .

Also, anybody know a way to see what serial number was used to reg a copy of client?

Actually, that was the whole point of adding this capability a while back. (Again, this change should just make the process easier in v4.1). Once the network encoder is set up, you can use the '-client' parameter to use the UI in client mode to connect to the main server. You could probably use the -connect param too. (p. 231 in the manual for params.)

So far I've had no luck with network encoding and the new parameters. As a matter of fact I tried setting everything up the old way and that didn't work either. The network tuners show up in the setup wizard but when I try to set things up I get that sage rotating icon forever.

Eric,

Can you set debug_logging=TRUE in both of the Sage.propeties files and then post them here? Also post your properties files.

I trimmed off alot from the server debug because it was about 5 megs and was mostly music files that sage was adding.
Attached Files
File Type: txt encoder - Sage.properties.txt (33.4 KB, 445 views)
File Type: txt encoder - sagetv_0.txt (14.7 KB, 537 views)
File Type: txt Main server - Sage.properties.txt (46.6 KB, 418 views)
File Type: txt Main server - sagetv_0.txt (84.5 KB, 474 views)

I am trying to do the same thing as well with the same

Greetings,

I am trying to do the same thing as well with the same results. I noticed in your log files you had

Doing broadcast discovery of new encoding servers on the network...
Error discovering servers:java.net.SocketTimeoutException: Receive timed out

I had these errors as well. I think this may be the root of the problem but I have no idea how to fix it.

Has anyone been able to get this feature to work?

Don

I have the exact same problem as well. Updated to the latest version of Java just in case - didn't help

I've tried either machine as the server but I get the same error each time.

The two log files don't correspond to each other. They're not at the same time. Can you do one from when they are and post it again?

Also, make sure both instances of SageTV are either V4.0 or that both are V4.1. (I couldn't tell which version yours were since you edited it out of the log file)

If that doesn't help then if you can do an Ethereal capture of the discovery failure that'd be very beneficial as well.

I was fighting with this for a while and in the end I decided to go back to just one server. The biggest reason I was trying to use this setup was to get around the serial new/old command issue but as it stands right now I may be better off just getting an usbirt.

The serial old/new command issue is fixed for the next beta release.

Any idea if i can set a linux copy of sage to be a client for my windows sage?

I really want a linux client in the livingroom, and this seems like the way to go.

Will it work, is the setup even the same given the obvious fact that linux is not windows?

P.S. Is there a linux SageTV client in the works?
