SageTV 4 STV STVi

I'm confused..

There are a quite a few downloads and extra's that can be added to sagetv right now and I'm wondering. Do most of these work with version 4.1?

Cayars seems like a nice package but looking over the message board, it is not supported anymore or maybe not able to run under 4.1. What about the others?

I'm afraid of installing something and breaking the setup I have which is running really nice but would like to have an RSS reader, Web browser and Comskip running.

Would it be just safe to say that anything in the SageTV download area in the forums would be safe to install?

Full blowns STVs (be it .stv or .xml) will work with pretty much any version of Sage above the minimum (whatever it is).

Imports, you have to be a bit more careful with. They're usually made for a specific STV/version. Eg most of nielm's imports are designed for the stock STV, and probably specify a version.

Does that mean cayars will work with 4.14?

I think it should, but you won't be able to use any of the new stuff added in Sage 4.

I had Cayers 2.2.8 and found that I could have most of what was provided there with 4.x by just adding Nielm's plug-ins. Plus you get the 4.x benefits and other imports provided for 4.x only. Just my two cents.

Ok, so full blown packages can break current features in 4.1 and Stvi imports are just additions. Great!! Sorry, I'm a newbie and still learning. Thanks for the great support.

I wouldn't say "break", that's not really what's happening. All of the UI stuff is defined in the STV file, all the 4.x UI improvements are in the 4.x STV, so if you use an STV based on an older version of the STV, you won't get the added features.

An old STV shouldn't affect anything in the core, so core changes for 4.x should still be present.
