What is the Proper Upgrade Proceedure?
I just bought a licensed 4.0 version of SageTV in November and now want to upgrade to the 4.1 version but not lose my settings. First, is my license key still good for the 4.1 version? If so, what is the correct way to upgrade? All documentation assumes an install from scratch. Do you do an uninstall of the 4.0 and then a re-install of the 4.1, or simply install the 4.1 over the 4.0? Thanks for any insight.

Someone please jump in to correct me if I'm wrong, but this is what works for me.
Don't uninstall 4.0, just make backup copies of wiz.bin and sage.properties before installing the new version, then copy them back into the default install folder, sagetv, after upgrading. All your settings will be preserved, and you will not need to enter your license key, I believe it is saved in the registry. Very simple to do, I've done it on every release since 2.2 or so. Do not copy the wiz.bin and properties file back to the directory. You shouldn't have to copy them back unless there is a problem with the install.
All you have to do is make backup copies of the 2 files robk mentioned then install the newer version on top of the old one and you're done. |

blade-
Doesn't an upgrade overwrite the old wiz.bin and sage.properties? Maybe I'm confusing it with a clean install, where I had to copy the lines ui_rc_mappings from a backup of sage.properties to restore my remote settings. Rob PS- I'll try it tonight, I want to try out the 4.1.4 beta! |

No upgrades don't overwrite the wiz.bin/sage.properties. Best practice for upgrades is (as always)
Backup your important files (wiz.bin/sage.properties/etc) Install The only thing an upgrade does is reset your STV to the default one, but you can easilly change back from within the UI. |

Thanks, I didn't know that. I've always replaced the two files mentioned and never had a problem. I still have to replace the DTV dll with one that tunes to channels below 100.

It shouldn't hurt anything (replacing them), since they should be the same

Thanks all. As suggested, I just ran the new install over my existing installation and everything worked out correctly. Thanks for all your help.

For some reason, Sage uninstalls/reinstalls its Windows service when you upgrade. I have to remember to set it to Auto start and configure it to run under my user name so it can log into my music/video shares.
It would be nice if Sage didn't reinstall the service if the directory path and .EXE file called haven't changed.
