LCD module under Linux?

Has anyone tried using an LCD module under Linux?

In Gentoo, you should be able to install LCDProc by typing "emerge lcdproc"

But from the web site, it doesn't say whether or not it can do what LCDSmartie does for Windows (basically Show, TV, or playback info to display on the LCD)....

Has anyone tried this program yet with the LCD?

I'm just wondering before I go and buy one.

If you've any knowledge in perl MAYBE you can use it to control SageTV and display info about what you're playing (like the tv program currently being watched and the title of a song being played...) -- I think it'd be very difficult though....

But doesn't Nielm have a plug-in that shows the playing and recording status already?

Yes, it does -- but my question about that is if it can talk with lcdproc or not. If you want the module to display simple system info then I'm sure that something can be easily conjured up where the buttons on the Serial/LPT module could be directly translated into keys/key combos that Sage would recognize for direct control of the system.

My whole thing about using an LCD/VFD module is customization, and I never really cared for something that tells me the simple and vanilla system temp, cpu usage, etc... maybe showing HDD free space would be good but I'd want it to show me what else it's doing pertaining to Sage -- IE. Recording: SHOW; Playing: MOVIE/SONG/ETC; etc, etc.... It'd also be really nice to have visualization on the module.

I've been surfing around seeing what Linux LCD/VFD module support that's out there and came up with a lot more than lcdproc -- liquid-mp3 looks really neat but I believe it only works with XMMS in Linux and Winamp in Windows; I also think that it has support for more modules.

I suppose what I'm getting at is it all depends on what your goal for the display is and finding what would work best to achieve your goal.
