playing an mpeg on a client crashes the 4.1.6 based server!
Hi
I've just got a new install of 4.1.6 on new hardware. ASUS A8V Delux, 3800+ AMD64 x2 , PNY 6600GT, 2 x PVR250, 1 x NOva-t (currently configured in sage), 250GB TV drive, 250GB videos. Currently using the Sage MPEG decoder. I've got a program that was recorded this morning on my old hardware (Travla C137 case, Epia MII 10000 (1GHz), 512MB RAM, 40GB Laptop HD) and that has been transfered over. The problem is that when I play this file on the server the server crashes. If I play it on a client (4.1.3 based at the moment) the server still crashes! Any thoughts on why this could be happenning and more importantly how to stopp it happening again?

I really hope that you aren't falling victim to VIA's poor chipset design. The A8V Deluxe uses the VIA K8T800 Pro chipset. I don't know if it true of the newer chipsets, but many (many, many, many, ...) people have had trouble with VIA motherboards in the past. I personally had bad experiences with several VIA boards, especially when transferring very large data streams over the network or between drives. Lots of lockups and crashes.
Not trying to be a bearer of doom and gloom, but do some searching on Google for VIA chipset issues. At the very least, check for newer drivers. Meanwhile, try to play the MPEG file outside of Sage, using another player. That can tell you if it's just a bad file. |

I'm beginning to fear I might be having the VIA chipset problem
I had a via board a few years ago, so I heard about all the problems although I never suffered from them myself. It does seemt to be the actual file as if I try and copy it the machine crashes as well. I've actually got the disc the file is on connected to the promise IDE controller (not raided). It wasnt created there as I just transfered the disc from the other machine. I'm trying to work out how I can mark the faulty bit of the drive as unavailable. Tried running a disk check and that rebooted as did doing a defragment (that file has 246 fragments)

Hmm!
I've now rearranged all the drives (2 x 250 WDRE, 2 x 250, 40G os, DVD ROM) so the troublesome drive is nolonger on the promise controller. The file now plays and can be copied without reboots. Looks like the Western Digital Raid Editiion drives are not entirely compatible with the Promise SATA378.
