Can't get MVP to work...
I am currently evaluating SageTV and really like it so far. In fact, if I can resolve this issue I'll buy it immediately.
I am trying to set up an MVP without much success. I ahve searched this forum well and haven't been able to find someone with quite the same problem. When I power on the MVP, it successfully gets a DHCP address, establishes a connection with the server, flashes the SageTV MVP boot screen a couple of times, then the MVP shuts off! I have an DFI Lanparty NF3 250GB motherboard with onboard (nVidia) ethernet. I have tried the "offload = disabled" setting as in other posts, and I have also tried a separate RealTek ethernet pci card, both with no change in the problem. I am running the latest SageTV beta (4.1.6.75) and I have unloaded all MediaMVP software and services. FWIW, GBPVR works fine with the MVP... Any help getting this to work would be greatly appreciated as I would love to be using SageTV as my main PVR software. Thanks! |

it shuts off? That sounds like a hardware/firmware issue to me. Did you get the MVP where you can return it... or try another on spec to see if it was, in fact, the machine?

I bought the MVP a couple of years ago, way before it had a purpose in SageTV.
The unit works absolutely fine in GBPVR and Hauppauge's MediaMVP software. I'll be able to try another one on the weekend to see if it only this unit. Any other ideas? |

I had this happen at some points. Seems like it was the STV file messing it up. Make sure you are using the XML stock one, not the STV stock one (yes, confusing). With service and MVP shut down, edit the MVP properties file (under clients dir) and point to the SageTV3.xml file and then save and restart service and MVP. You can search other posts for the exact place to find the line to change, but it is near the top.

sabre,
Thanks for the help, but I don't have a "Clients" directory under the SageTV directory. I see references in other posts to a ..SageTV\SageTV\Clients directory, but I don't have one. What am I missing? Last edited by Q*bert; 02-10-2006 at 06:38 PM. |

And have you shut down/disabled/uninstalled the GBPVR software and make sure none of that is running? If this is still running it will interfere with the MVP running successfully with Sage.

Yes, I have completely uninstalled GBPVR and Hauppauge software and services.
This is getting really frustrating... |

Had the same problem, here is how I fixed it
Just upgraded to 4.16, and saw the exact same problem!
Very, very frustrating for me... Tried many things, but this is what fixed it for me: Pull the plug on the MVP for at least 15 minutes Go into the sagetv directory (something like program files/sagetv/sagetv) Look for a 'clients' folder You'll see at least one properties and autobackup file in the clients folder... (I deleted all files there) Reboot your machine, make sure Sage starts up Plug in your MVP Very important!!! Always wait at least 15 minutes with the plug pulled on the MVP before testing any changes you made (15 minutes, no less, I was burned badly on this) There is a registry change that helps MVP performance, you can get it on the Hauppauge site http://hauppauge.com/pages/support/s..._mediamvp.html I was a former GBPVR user, and found that setting your ethernet port to 10/half instead of 100/full helps a bit (although this does not have as big an effect on Sage) I had a lot of trouble using different MVP.BIN files in the Sage directory... Mixing and matching is a bad thing with different versions. If using 4.1.3, try the original MVP.BIN that comes with it... If this does not work, there is a replacement, I'll have to dig through previous posts to find it. If using Beta 4.1.6, use the MVP.BIN that comes with it, replacing it with an old file will cause problems. Good luck, and please post your results here in case others have similar problems. Larry |

Clients directory
Forgot to mention....
You said something about not having a 'clients' folder in your sagetv/sagetv folder... I would create one there. The files I had in my folder had the mac address of the MVP in the file name, when I restarted the MVP it recreated the files there. Larry |

Alright, now this is just weird...
I got a second MVP to try. Same problem: screen flashes the SageTV booting screen, then the MVP shuts off. So I installed SageTV onto a brand new computer with no other software installed. I still get exactly the same problem. This has to be a network problem, doesn't it? |

Try this. I was running SageLinux and had the MVP going straight to a black screen with 4.1.4 all the time until I'd boot into Windows and reset it (since then it's been fixed in 4.1.6)....... anyway....
Turn off SageTV (including SageService and the program) Reinstall the Hauppauge software. Run the Hauppauge software until you get its main menu showing through the MVP on your TV. Once you do, turn off the service, unplug the MVP for a few seconds. Now start SageTV. For some reason, it seems to reset something internally and lets the MVP work again. Lauren |

Lauren,
Thanks for the tip but it didn't work. It seems to me that I've eliminated the PC and the MVP as the problem source since I've tried new hardware in both cases. I've tried a clean install of Sage on a otherwise pristine system. How about the network? I think I'll try using a crossover cable to connect the MVP directly, startup a DHCP server on my HTPC, and see if I can isolate the problem from there... |

I have now also tried the following:
1) I used a USB-ethernet adapter to eliminate the network adapter. 2) I used a crossover cable between the MVP and my HTPC, uplugged the HTPC from the entire network, rebooted, started a DHCP server on the HTPC and restarted the MVP. 3) Uninstalled Symantec Antivirus 4) Stopped all non-essential services. And nothing has ever changed the problem. In all cases, the MVP will boot, find the DHCP server, get an address, load the application, start the application, flash the SageTV screen a couple of times, and then shut off! The MediaMVP's (4 in all now) all work great with GB-PVR. At this point, I am completely out of ideas... |

Q-bert, send an email to betatest at sagetv.com and we'll send you some info so we can debug this some more. (try it with 4.1.8 if you haven't yet, that's what we'll want to get info on)

How I got it to work
Hi there!
I have just been able to get my Hauppauge MVP to work with my set-up. Well, I can tell you that it was not easy. 2 whole days in front of the computer and reading various letters in the forum. I had all the problems but once I had work out the process everything works now. So what to do to get your MVP to work. 1. Start by uninstalling your current SageTV software. 2. Restart your computer. 3. Go in and delete the rest of SageTV folder under programs. (c:\program files\sagetv ). Very important as there are my files left on the computer what will stop your MVP from working. 4. Install Hauppauge own software and make sure that the MVP is working properlly. Once you have seen that you can see the MVP then you will know that it is okay. Turn off the MVP and leave if off. 5. Now download the lates SageTV beta x.18 version. Install it and make very sure that in the files sage.properties and sageclient.properties under miniserver/gateway you have entered the same address as your computer's gateway. Save the files and reboot your computer. 6. Once you have rebooted your computer stop the Hauppauge server by going into programs hauppauge mediaMvp\stop. 7. Start SageTv and make sure that you have got the support for MVP running. 8. Power up the MVP and it will take sometime but you should get the main page of the SageTV. If everything works then uninstall Hauppauge's own software and you should be fine. |
