Port Forwarding with DHCP

This has me confused.
Since you need to forward ports to use placeshifter, it seems you should use static IPs, however the MVPs require a DHCP server, which could change the IP of your server, breaking placeshifter. Not a good thing if you are away from the house.

So what is the best way to get this to work? I can't figure this out at all.

I have a Linksyst WRT54G router, XP Server, XP Client, 2-MVPs.

Thanks,
Dan W.

setup the dhcp range on the router from e.g. 192.168.0.100 to 192.168.0.199 . And give the server a static ip in the range below that e.g. 192.168.0.2. A different approch is to bind the port to the mac address of the server. Some routers offer this. But the first solution is easier.

Also, on some routers you can tell its DHCP server to reserve a specific IP for a specific machine. The machine still uses DHCP but the router always tells it to use the same IP address. Slightly more robust in my opinion, so if you take that machine somewhere else it still looks for an IP with DHCP.

and just to clarify the OP, the computer acting as the Sage Server is the device that needs a fixed IP address. The clients, MVP or PlaceShifter can still use DHCP.

I have the same router, the difference is I'm using the Sveasoft firmware.

Applications & Gaming-->DHCP

I have an option for static addressing. I'm able to assign a mac address a specific IP outside of the DHCP range. I do this with my server so I have remote access to the SageTV webpage.

If yours doesn't have this, then ignore my post. Alternatively you could go to http://www.sveasoft.com/ and use their firmware.

Another thing to keep in mind is even if you use DHCP when the lease is up and it tries to renew the first thing it will do is try to renew with the the same IP address it is already using. If you have a small number of devices and the lease times and days are all different you'll just about always get the same address. All of my devices are using DHCP and have the same address for the last 4 years,
