port forwarding
hello everyone. For those that don't know-i recently got DSL after never realizing it reached to my house in the boonies. I am very anxious to start using the webserver and placeshifter but i have been having some trouble opening up ANY ports on my router. I believe to be doing everything properly--no firewall in windows (for testing only!), forwarded the ports to my server's IP address. Rebooted modem/router....and nothing. I have rebooted, deleted all my port forward requests and started over--but nothing. I have been using portscan to determine if any ports are being opened and it keeps coming back that only 3 are open (none of which i specified)...lower ones like 125, 80... So--its obvious my ports are not getting forwarded properly. FWIW--i have an actiontec DSL wireless modem/gateway. I have found a few links to people who say they can't get the ports to forward either. So--i'm about to give up. any suggestions? I also tried calling actiontec support and they want to charge me $30 to help me forward ports!!!! unbelievable. so--if noone can help-maybe recommend a new dsl modem/wireless/router that is cheap?
Thanks JUC edit: the model of the dls modem/gateway is GT704WR

I'll throw in my "two cents" FWIW. I have clients (non Sage related) who we needed to do port forwarding for a program called "pc Anywhere." As it turns out, a lot of those modem-routers out there (usually provided by the ISP) that have built in "routers" are either buggy or don't have the port forwarding enabled (even though they appear to have them). It might be better to just get a regular DLink or Linksys and try it that way. When and if you do - what happens is the Dlink or Linksys automatically changes the assigned IP from the modem (ie: if it's 192.168.1.1 on your modem then everything including the workstations I believe gets assigned a 192.168.2.1 - something like that. But, the router takes care of all that). I'd say try a "real router" and see if that works. Let us know.
Edited - since you are doing port forwarding - I'm not sure how that will work now that I think about it since the modem may still have to do something with the "port forwarding request." I'm not sure - but I'm almost positive that you can still disable the "routing capabilities" in the modem anyway so as to use a separate router like a Dlink or Linksys. So, I'd recommend disabling the routing capabilities in the modem when installing the separate router and that should work. Mike Last edited by mike1961; 03-20-2006 at 02:18 PM. |

Hi Juc,
I recently got dsl service and have the gt-701wg actiontec; I had trouble also but it works great now. My problem was that I still had my linksys router hooked up. I disconnected the linksys and got a switch instead. Also, I noticed that my port forwarding settings did NOT always take on the first try. I would go back into the settings page and the ports were not there that I had just assigned to be forwarded. Hope you get it working because it is real nice to have the wireless cababilities built in. Randy

wheelrandolph, glad someone else has similar equipment. When you said that you would go back into the settings and the ports weren't forwarded--did you mean you went into advanced setup--then to application level gateway--which brings up the port forwarding page? If so--once i select my LAN device from the drop down list it does list the ports that created as being setup. Is there another place in the routers software that tells me what ports are open just so i can verify? I've restup the ports over a dozen times so i am not sure why it is not taking. I have port 8080 specified for start, end and map. That is what is stumping me. I do not have any additional switches or routers setup so that is not a problem of mine either. Any help would be great. They also mistakenly sent me 2 modem/gateways so i might try the other one just in case this one is buggy.
Thanks JUC just tried the second modem/gateway--same results ![]()

I just go to Advanced settings and on the left listing (menu) I select "Port Forwarding"; I am not familiar with "application level gateway"?? You should have the Port Forwarding on the left.

I guess we found the difference between the 701 and 704 models. No 'port forwarding' page...but i'm assuming the application level gateway is the same as that is where the instructions tell me to go to forward ports...maybe i'll try updating the firmware.
