IP connection issue with MVP and Sage sharing one cat5 cable
This isn't specific to Sage, I don't think, but this seems like a good place to ask.
I have a SageTV server in a closet in a bedroom. It's two floors (and 60' of Cat 5) away from my router. When I have guests in town I would like to use a MVP in that room. Since I only have one cable running that distance, I planned to 'share' the connection via a switch/hub of some sort. I had thought that I could just plug in the wire from my router into the WAN port on this and connect the MVP to one port and the Sage server to another port. The connection lights all light up, but no network connections seem to be made. I didn't tinker with the Dlink 704 yet, but I might have its internal firewall still enabled (I used it a few years ago as a DSL router). Aside from those settings that I might not have correctly set yet, *should* this setup work correctly? Thanks matt Edit: Assuming that I do get this working, do I want this DI 704 to be a seperate DHCP server (to just the sage server and MVP)? Or would I want my main router to be the DHCP server (as it is now) and this to just be a fancy "Y" splitter? Last edited by matt91; 03-21-2006 at 01:14 PM. |

hmmm, would you be able to just use the dlink and remove your router from the equation all together? I have a similar setup. I have my server in my bedroom with only one cat5 cable running to my living room. In my living room i have my DSL modem/gatway and an MVP. I connect my DSL line into the gateway--and use that as a switch. So i connect my MVP to the gateway as well as the cat5 cable leading to my server. I 'think' this is what you are trying to do.

the best way to use that DI-704 as just a switch by using only the LAN ports for all the connections. Plug the MVP, server , and the other router into the LAN ports. DO not use the WAN port at all. You will also need to disable the DHCP service on the DI-704 and only use the dhcp service on the main router.

This sounds like a plan. I'll try tonight if I have a few minutes and see what happens.
thanks Matt Quote:
