Stability
Am I the only one having stability problems? I upgraded from V2 to V4 back in November 2005. Then early this year I upgraded to 4.1.6 and have had nothing but instability since then. I am running my third beta version (4.1.12) in 2 weeks on the recommendation of Sage support.
I don't want to hash out my specific problems. I really just want to hear if others are having these problems or is there something specific to my hardware/configuration that I need to address. |

I don't see a point in running a stability poll on beta software. It's not likely to be stable by definition (beta). I'm expecting at least two more cycles on this beta run before things settle down and a release can be anticipated.
I think "PlaceShifter" has turned out to be a bit of tough nut for Sage dev. team. A stability poll on the current release (4.1.3.67) would be meaningful. I found 4.1.3.67 to be quite stable. The release version (4.1.3.67) is what you should be using if wanting stability. DFA

I do not want to second guess Sage Tech Support but I'm not so sure that was the best choice for you. I have found, for the most part, each beta release to be improving. I am using 4.1.12 beta but believe it is not yet 100%: occassional crash and loss of audio during live TV are my issues.
You may want to consider rolling back to 4.1.3.67 (which can be tricky because of wiz.bin) or stay where you are until the dust settles. DFA

You need to understand they are asking you to move to a beta release to fix your particular issues which you have requested them to do. There will be some inherent stability problems until they get to the final release. You could of stayed where you were with the understanding that your problems wouldn't be fixed until the next release. Some people have actually remained on 2.2.8 still. Big question is-did moving to the next released betas fix the problems you were having? If it did then that's the best you can expect being on a beta. Things can break with each beta and hopefully everything will be fixed when it is actually released.

I moved to the latest beta release voluntarily as I've always done whenever a beta was available over the years that I've used Sage, but I have to say that this has been the most unstable Sage beta I've ever had. It's my own choice, but I've never been as anxious to see a final release.

stability for me on v4.x has been horrible. Client crashes every other day + server service crashes every week or so.

4.1.12 has been pretty stable. Running the client on the server has locked up twice in the past week. The server service has continued to run even though the client is frozen. 2 other PC clients haven't had an issue and the MVP has been chugging along. I know-the wife watches one of the PC and the MVP at bedtime. I would hear.

I do not have server stability problem but well client.
SageTV runs in service mode and sometimes, the cilent locks or silently closes. I'm also using the Media MVP for some days now without major issues.

My sage client has been exiting to the desktop at any random point during playback for these latest betas... There's nothing in the log of any value either...

Beta's are just that, but my impression is that Beta's lately are being pumped out with the same quality we can expect from Windowz product line. |

I always run the latest beta on a purpose built HTPC and have no complaint on the stability. There's nigling problems from time to time, like .wmv tags, DivX, etc.. but I submit logs and files and they usually get fixed (The Hockey problem was a biggie...fixed). While it would be nice to take any PC in any state of (dis)repair and still have Sage run perfectly...I only run the following...with success:

I'm on Sage 4.1.5...been a little lazy about upgrading lately since I'm stable and don't have the cpu power for placeshifting.
Only thing I had issues with lately was when I rotated my tv stand and then didn't adjust the HD antenna to compensate.

I then called SageTV and talk to a live person for help. Nice person, but all I got was try the latest WinTV drivers. I did, it made things worse. I called back, and it went down hill from there. So I've been just living with it since it's on and off. I will say that ~maybe~ .12 beta fixed it since I have seen less of it - maybe it's gone now. Time will tell. By the way, I think your product, SageTV, is wonderful overall and I really like the flexability it brings. Beta's need more quality control in my opinion. Over all and the more time passes, the more glad I am that I gave up TiVo for SageTV. SageTV has so much more to offer. Keep up the good work and spend more time testing beta's before shipping. |

The only Stability problems I have had with SageTV in the last 6 months are related the following:
1. HD Tuners quiting and hanging SageTV...was resolved by a dll provided by Support. 2. Any time I have used VMR9 FSE after several days when I exit SageTV it causes a Blue Screen of Death. I honestly do not see much if any improvement in quality so I have basically just decided to live with Overlay as the system has never crashed during that and given that this is a server I am no longer going to risk it. Overall my system stability has been very good with the latest betas. John

Well, I just started using SageTV at version 4.1 and I did have problems at first when I installed it on my existing PC. Just for shits and grins I decided to take one of my spare computers I had, just a P4 2.8GHZ 500DDRAM, and do a fresh install of xp pro and sagetv. With just that stuff on there, man it runs like a settop box with no hiccups and very fast responses to changing channels, stopping and starting live tv, browsing menu, etc. I'm very happy with it.
