TiVo selling new 2 tuner standalone with ungodly service prices

It would appear to be a case of way too little, way too late: TiVo unveils 2 tuner stand alone TiVo. Doing a fast read I don't see anything this box can do that our Sagetv can not do................with no monthly service fee

Quote:
Record from two basic cable channels, or one basic cable and one digital cable channel, at once. Does not support recording from two digital cable or satellite channels at once. Supports recording from cable and satellite sources only; does not support recording from over-the-air antenna.

And the "service" pricing leaves a lot to be desired:
Quote:
$16.95 per month
with 3-year plan
$18.95 per month
with 2-year plan
$19.95 per month
with 1-year plan

3-year for only $469
with 3-year plan
2-year for only $369
with 2-year plan
1-year for only $224
with 1-year plan

Although the price on the box itself is only $30.

One-time fee for this box: $30

when they first announced they were changing to this new business model, they said that the Tivo unit will be free, now they want $30 for each. For that price, I rather get a SageTV Extender license.

Honestly - for me, switching to Sage was not a money issue but an issue with limitations. When I first got Tivo I thought it was great (compared to VHS). Everything started to "fall apart" with Tivo when I got a second box for upstairs and networked them only to find out that Tivo transfers a file from one box to another at USB 1 speeds (11 mbs). Switching to Sage has provided me with a central storage system for all my recordings which I think is huge. But, I found that that was only the beginning. I love the forum here with lots of support along with great customizability of Sage. I like compressing my movies and dvd's to mpeg 4 files at 250/mb hour. I like Nielm's add-ons including the IMDB database, customizable menus and also Mame arcade games or any other video games. There's just so much you can do with Sage and a "real computer" for client's. I thought about the MVP, XBOX, etc but in the end, I wanted real computers. There are two things I see that Tivo has over Sage...

1. Tivo is much easier to setup for the non-computer person (not us huh)?
2. Recently Deleted. I would like to see that feature in Sage at some point. What if my kid starts playing with the remote and accidentally deletes a show? It would be nice to have a feature like this. Maybe the deleted shows could just go into some kind of Deleted Archive folder and the oldest files get overwritten first...something like that.

Other than that I can't think of anything anymore.

Mike

TIVO did me in when they did away with (as I understand it) the life time subscription. I have a series 1 TIVO (with a lifetime which is still free). But new machines no longer have the lifetime option.

You can still get a lifetime subscription if you can find a Humax40 or Humax80 - I picked up an open box one at CompUSSR for $49

Also, eBay has lifetime gift cards (more expensive than the originaly $299 price though)
