Installing placeshifter on sage client
Hi,
Is it possible to install Placeshifter (not the client) on the Sage Client machine to use it serve the video? I have used placeshifter on my sage server without problems, but it is a slower box - so trying to install the placeshifter (server) on my client PC. Any help is appreciated. Thanks! |

Quote:
SageTV is used on a single PC to act as the server for all your clients -- the Placeshifter, Media Extender, and SageTVClient all connect back to the main SageTV server. (SageTV itself can be installed on a 2nd system and act as a network encoder and/or a client, but it is another client, not a 2nd server.) - Andy

Andy,
I run my Sageserver on an athlon XP2100 and have a client built around XP3200 (64bit). I have run the placeshifter off the sage server- but it usually uses a lot of CPU resources. I want to use my Client PC (with sagetv client installed) to act as the server- only for the placeshifter function- I hope this makes sense..... Thanks, naln. |

I think Andy understood your question. He's trying to say that you can't do what you want. The Sage server is just that, ONLY a server. If you are using Sage on 1 machine, what you actually have is a machine running both the server and client at the same time.
In your case, I fully understand you wanting to have the higher powered machine 'feeding' placeshifter but that isn't how it works. The only machine that can serve the placeshifter IS the Sage Server machine. In your case, the only option is to put the Sage server software on the faster machine. Sorry it wasn't what you wanted to hear. -PGPfan

Actually, I didn't understand the question -- due to the mention of the Placeshifter running as the server. But, I suppose connecting the placeshifter client to a particular server is what was meant... and the desire to use a SageTVClient installation as the server that the PS clients connect to.
Anyway: right, you can't do that. Only the main SageTV server can act as a server for any clients. - Andy
