Suggestion: Download instead of Stream.

I'd like to see an option for Placeshifter to download an entire show instead of streaming it. I am currently away from home, with VERY limited bandwidth, and would much rather wait to see the show at high rez, than see it live or stream now at super low rez.

Plus, my CPU at the other end really isn't that powerful and I'd rather it not have to transcode the file.

So, how about an option to download (or buffer) the entire show, then play it back when needed. Save me setting up an FTP server and downloading it.

My Webserver allows downloading of the file without transcoding... You need a big internet connection though: 2Gb/hr = 5.5Mbps

As been discussed before, try out www.orb.com Access any file on your computer to download OR stream.

I looked at this when it first came out, and the problem seemed to be that it would try to record shows. Have they changed it so it won't try to use the turner and mess up SageTV???


Plus, I can't really install it now, as I'm 700 Miles from home, no real computer user at home, and won't be home for months!!! I'd really rather have all the software in one package, and can't see this being that hard to change.

I asked support this question at the end of June when describing a problem I was having. They told me that version 5.2 would have a configurable buffer allowing us to do this, but that it wouldn't be available for at least a couple of months. In the meantime, Check out this thread:

What ports does VLP use? anyone? I do all my remote stuff to home via port forwarding and SSH tunnels. Everything works fine til I try to play a "local file" from the webserver. After I select VLP (or WMP) it goes to a screen w/ player controls then just sits there. not even a blip of traffic on the WAN. Using the Streaming option I actually get an image but it appears to be only the first frame of video and no audio. Constant WAN activity though. My guess is streamed isn't transcoded like placeshifter? I can use remote desktop to fork over the files for local playback. Just thought I'd give some feedback on a non-typical situation. Oh, I get the same behavior in Mozilla and Internet Exploder.
