Video info for imported videos does not get preserved during upgrade ?

After installing the new beta and upgrading my existing wiz.bin the meta data for all my imported videos (genre, show info, etc) is gone ...

Here are the steps I performed:

- backed up old SageTV folder
- uninstalled v5.0
- installed v6.0
- configured SageTV with exactly the same video import directories as before the upgrade
- shut down Sage, copied 5.0 wiz.bin to SageTV folder, and restarted
- Sage upgraded the database during startup
- all the existing video info for imported videos is gone

Did I do this the wrong way, or should I file another bug report ?

I didnt uninstall anything, just upgraded both server and client, no other changes made, and it lost all but about 20 shows' info. But since I had already lost it a week ago I will just re-do it all over again (and hopefully not again after that!)

With all of the changes to the database what did you expect. This looks like alot of stvi will be broken with this upgrade.

Didn't I see something in the "New" feature list about new database APIs.

Actually, even though it's a beta, I'd expect it to not loose any previous data, especially since it was going through the process of converting it. No reason at all that it would dump any data (unless you stop it in the middle of the process thinking the system has hung or something).

I'm waiting for confirmation to see if I remembered this correctly, but here is something to try:
  1. Close SageTV completely.
  2. Save a copy of your new wiz.bin, then restore your pre-v6 wiz.bin. If you didn't save a copy, SageTV did & it is in the SageTV folder w/an extension of your previous SageTV version number. (Note: If you haven't run v6 for the first time already, wiz.bin should already be unchanged.)
  3. Make sure to set these properties:
    force_full_content_reindex=false
    disable_full_content_reindex=true
  4. Restart SageTV

After this process has completed, you can remove those 2 properties, since SageTV will know not to reindex the database again.

Unless I'm forgetting something (or it doesn't do what I think it does), this should leave your old imported media as-is. It would leave any recording info as-is too, but I'm not sure what all reindexing is done on those database entries.

Now, since things aren't updated about for the imported media (I think), it hasn't had a chance to re-read any tags for things like music. So, the next steps would be:
  1. Remove any import dirs for the imported media you want reindexed to take advantage of new tag reading/storing/etc, such as your music files.
  2. Rescan the library to make sure the media from those dirs has been removed.
  3. After the files are gone, add those import dirs again & let them be scanned.

Edit: I'm told the above info is correct, so see if that helps w/all the customized data.

Shouldn't we reset (remove) the properties

force_full_content_reindex=false
disable_full_content_reindex=true

before performing those steps on non-video import files ? Or can they now remain set all the time ?

Thanks,
Dirk

Reindexing affects the entire database/existing imported media, not scanning new import dirs. The 2nd process I listed was causing those music files to become 'new imports' that would be freshly scanned.

So, you would leave the properties as they are listed.

But, I'm not yet sure if a reindex would occur if you removed them & restarted v6. I'll get back on that one.

Update: yes, you would remove the reindex properties afterwards, since the database will know not to update again. (Keep it in mind for the future, though, would be my guess.) I'll edit my instructions, above.

How do I know if my wiz.bin has been "reindexed"?

The reason I ask is when I first installed/started v6, I didn't have the "service" turned on. I set up my tuners so they would have the epg data to "cover" my future manual recordings from the previous wiz.bin and also to make sure I wouldn't loose my current/future recordings to the imported videos section. Next (after the epg data was updated) I completely closed sagetv, edited the properties file to "see" my recording directories, copied in my old wiz.bin, and started sagetv (for the second time).

Well that's how I remember it, I was very sleepy at the time. And yes, pease keep in mind, I later remembered that the epg data is located in the wiz.bin, but I confused my self into thinking that if the tuners weren't set up first before I copied in my old wiz.bin, I would have messed things up.

But I still don't think my database/wiz.bin was "reindexed", since it only occurs upon the first time of starting the v6 of sagetv.... and I copied my old wiz.bin before starting sagetv for a second time.

So how do I know if the database is as it should be for v6?

It should be by the fact that you are running v6.

I beleive it is controlled by noticing that wiz.bin is from an older version, so it starts the reindex, then marks the database as up to date when done... as far as I know, that 'mark' is in wiz.bin itself.

Whether you turned on the "service" or not shouldn't matter. If you start up Sage on the server and your "service" isn't running Sage will run in server mode just like it used to before there was a service. Based on that your wiz.bin should have been converted.
