SageTV Media Center on Two HTPCs
Hello all, I have a quick question. I currently have one HTPC with 3 tuners, and everything works well. I am getting ready to build another one with 4 tuners. My wife wants to be able to watch the recorded shows from either HTPC. Is this possible?
One HTPC will be in our bedroom, and one is in the living room. She wants to be able to watch any program that has been recorded from either HTPC on either HTPC. So if she recorded CSI in the living room, she could watch it in the bedroom. I know you can buy the client to watch on another computer. But if we get the full version of SageTV will we be able to have the same abilities so we can get our tuners to work in the new HTPC, and still stream in the video from the other HTPC as needed? Thanks Armyb77 |

If you want to have tuners in both HTPC's for a total of 7, then you will need 2 complete full versions of SageTV. 1 would be the master server, and the other would be network server. The master server would be in charge of the master recording schedule and support any placeshifters or media extenders. It will tell the network server what shows to record, and tell it where to store them. (edit: if you plan on doing any transcoding work, which would include using a placeshifter or watching divix/xvid/hd on the media extender, then the most powerful PC would be best used as your master server.)
Either server would be able to view recordings and add/remove favorites, just like normal. If you don't need all 7 tuners, then you could just build 1 server with the 4 tuners and run full SageTV on that one. Teh other PC could run SageTV Client and watch all recordings and update favorites. It just couldn't control any tuners installed within itself. All tuner usage would be streamed from the SageTV server. Last edited by ke6guj; 10-12-2006 at 11:33 PM. |

I am using one SageTV master server with 4 tuners (two duals) and an MVP in the other room. This seems to be the cheapest way to get it done, plus the MVP is silent! I am amazed at how powerful the Sage software is.
