playing back media files to my TV

i have a Hauppauge 350 and am currently trying the sagetv demo, the tv works great, recording works great, the TV guide works great.

My question is, i want to use the media center to play other mpeg and avi files to my TV. Sage seems to play them just fine on my computer, but why will they not push to my tv?

The recordings i make with the sagetv program will push to my TV just fine, why not my own mpegs and AVI's? like recordings i make off my digital cam corder.

Thanks for the help.

V.

If you are using the TV-out on the 350, it is because the 350 has a hardware decoder that is limited to only being able to play mpeg1/2 video formats. To play other formats on the TV, you would need to go through your video card.

thanks for the tip.

you are probably correct with regards to savingthe headache.

I found a program online called WinMPG Video Convert that i downloaded a trial for, and it only took about 30mins to convert the movie file i had to mpg2 (other output options were available.)

to save the headache of converting every avi i have a tv out card might be the option.

Will see if i can find a bulk converter .... maybe that is the ticket.

FWIW ..... www.winmpg.com

I have some AVI's which are a problem, and am currently testing using NERO6 to convert them into mpg's. Their size goes up (I convert them to DVD quality to be sure they are good mpg's). My first experience is that these converted mgp's play ok.

As yourself, I'm also looking for a tool that would give me what an mpg in reality is (clearly not all the ones we need). For AVI's I got a free tool called GSpot, but don't know anything like that for an mpg .
