New Sage Server Advice???
I'm looking at the following PC to replace my Athlon 2400+ for my main Sage Server.
My goal is to be able to use High-Quality transcoding to my MVPs in the house for shows recorded in HD. Right now, low quality barely works and all shows are recorded in HD. Current PC: AMD Athlon 2400+ ASUS K8N-E Deluxe MB 1 GB DDR 400 RAM SapphireTech (ATI) Radeon 9600SE New PC: ASUS P5B-E MB Intel CORE2 DUO E6300 CPU 1 GB DDR2-800 RAM SahhpireTech (ATI) X1300XT This PC will also continue playback HD content (through DVI) onto an HD set (the current PC does it just fine) I can't really afford (or get by my wife) anything too much more than this. thanks for the comments! stacy Last edited by srothwell; 11-21-2006 at 08:11 PM. |

Looks great to me. You could even take the video card down a notch or two if you wanted to free up some more money. Hell, my server just has a fanless GeForce 2 in it
Are you planning on doing any type of RAID? Edit: I guess with PCI-E, you don't really have that may low-end choices for video card, so never mind

I would suggest a 7600GT if you can. Of course, if the 1300 does the job for your playback, then there's no real need to move up in $$ just yet. You could use it for games with a 7600GT if that has any advantages.
Are you going to use the old server as a client? If you used PCs as clients, you will have better playback quality, and no need for transcoding...just a random comment which you are no doubt aware of.

I think you didn't notice this part of the post. He would need a good vid card to do this. |

I'd also suggest considering an Nvidia card instead, primarily for the Purevideo support which will eventually be defacto for HD just as its become for SD.

My current Radeon 9600SE does a fine job of HD right now. I kind of consider moving to the 1300 a huge step up :-)
My old PC will be repuropsed as a home file server.... just a curiosity.... how do you rank a Athlon 2400+ against a P4 2.8GHz? This is for the repruposed PC? And if I stuck a Sempron 64 3400+ or Athlon 3000+ in it? thanks! |

I was wondering if you had purchased the parts for this yet?
I am thinking of something similar (E6400 and ATI X1950). However, the pictures of the board scare me a little when it comes to the PCI slots. The capacitors appear to be lined up with the PCI slots, and I am worried that my Hauppauge PVR150s and PVR500 might have clearance issues. Anyone have any experience with this board? |
