Recording Status LED

What software and hardware would be needed to have an LED (or even LCD for more info) to light up when recording (and to show what is recording on what tuner)?

Any ideas on where I can start?

I could be wrong, but it looks like www.lcdsmartie.com is now just a "placeholder" page. Do a Google search on lcdsmartie, and you'll get the Sourceforge page and some other links...
