Placeshifting Locator
How often does the placeshifting locator update with Your Sage's server IP address? Does it save the Private IP address or the address of your router on the web? When I look at the configure placeshifter connection, the IP is the private IP address, but the test placeshifter connection says it works ok.
Working on this setup and want to make sure I'm understanding everything correctly. Currently I have a wireless router at home with a LAN. I've been using DHCP for my LAN, I figure the computer with Sage needs a static IP, so, using the settings in my router I was able to always give that computer the same IP. I also set it up to forward port 31099 to that IP. Now, my router has the real IP that I will need for access when I'm not at home, since it changes I also setup with one of those free dynamic ip sites and my router to always update it for a given hostname. My plan was to use that hostname rather than the locator id, but if the locator ID does the same thing, there would be no need. Since I will also use it when at home over the LAN, will i need two profiles, on using the IP/hostname of the router when i'm not at home and one using the private ip of the sage computer when i'm on the LAN. I think I will need two, but a part of me thinks that if I use the routers WAN IP/hostname, they would figure out they are on same network and data wouldn't go past my router... I'm curious about the network traffic, so if: A=sage server B=sage placeshifter C=my router D=locator ID server E=some other router when i'm not at home So, if I'm at home and I use the direct private IP address in B, B would connect to C which would connect to A and stream would be A-C-B. If i'm not at home, B would connect to E, which would use D to find IP address of A, then when it hits C, my port forwarding sends it to A, and then the stream would be A-C-E-B with a bunch of stuff between C-E. Now, if I'm at home and I use locator ID, B would connect to C which would use D to find IP address of A (which is same), then C would use port forwarding to send it to A, so, even though it had to use the locator ID and port forwarding, would the actual stream still only be A-C-B and the same as if I use direct private IP? This is what I'm thinking... Last edited by OttoNP; 12-03-2006 at 04:17 PM. |

I'm not exactly sure what is being asked, so...
Your SageTV server will periodically notify the remote Locator ID server about its IP if the IP address changes. (This IP address is the external address the rest of the world would use to contact your system.) So, the Locator ID server should be kept up to date about the current IP address a remote Placeshifter connection would need to use. If you connect to your SageTV server via Placeshifter on your LAN using the Locator ID, it should be able to tell that it is really using a local connection and use your LAN w/o going out to the internet and back again. - Andy

Does the locator ID also store the private IP? I.E. my router is ip address aaa.aaa.aaa.aaa and my private ip address assigned to my sage server is bbb.bbb.bbb.bbb, does the locator store both or just the external address? I'm wondering if setting up my router to forward port 31099 to the private ip address was required or not.
Thanks Again |
