Angry Failed to locate gui server

I've read similar threads for other people but haven't seen any solutions.

Currently I'm a trial user of Sage 6.0 RC to determine if I want to buy or not. This MVP situation will make my decision.

I have a wired MVP v2.03 connected to a switch with one PC and then to my router which has another PC, my VOIP adapter, and my HTPC. (both are D-Link)

I have been able to run the MVP with Hauppauge and GBPVR. DHCP in router shows IPs for all my devices. The placeshifter/extender servers are on. The MVP start up shows the HTPC and correct IP but when it tries to connect it responds failed to locate gui server.

I make sure that only one MVP software package is running whenever and I've tried placeshifter on the PC connected on the same switch and that worked very well.

In the task manager on the server I see small CPU spikes whenever the MVP tries to make connections.

It appears that Sage can't start up the MVP. What is going on??

Well, we just had a power outage due to a storm, and now that the power's back on, I'm seeing the exact same error. Unfortunately, I'm at work, and my wife's only got so much patience for troubleshooting.

I've got pretty much the identical topology as you, but with a Linksys router & hub.

If I get things running, I'll post my steps.

Good luck.

I e-mailed sageTV support and they asked for the log file. I sent them the whole thing but I thought I would also attach a portion of it here. At least the MVP part.

So as I figure the server and MVP are "connecting" but not correctly. I vaguely remember reading something about Sage not booting the MVP fast enough.

What version of the MVP do you run? IT is on the lower side of the unit, something like Rev E3A (which is mine)

I have never had a single problem with my mvp ever (besides its menus being slow), even on sage 6.

That's about all I was getting out of my original MVP before I had it replaced with Hauppauge. It worked with the Hauppauge software but not SageTV. You can check out my thread here if you like.

Well, I'm afraid I can't add much more to this. After having the server powered down for awhile, then rebooting, everything's back online.

I think in my particular case the power outage must've SNAFU'd my LAN. It happens.

The only non-power-related thing I did -- and this may not mean anything -- was to replace the mvp.bin with a copy of the original I'd made earlier, then restarting the Sage service. I suppose it's possible the mvp.bin file got corrupted, but it's probably a long-shot.

Well that would be a bummer if it is the case. But I contacted Hauppauge tech support to see what they say.

Thanks for everyones help.

Also in my situation, I noticed a few strange things even while using the Hauppauge software. When a video was playing I had no way to return to the main menu on the MVP after stopping it. I would have to unplug the device and plug it back in (power). I was going round and round literally with SageTV's support and getting nowhere fast. My guess all along was defective hardware so I finally just decided to see what Hauppauge felt about it and they replaced it with no problem after I explained everything in detail.

Well just to bring up an update and close out this thread.

Hauppauge confirmed that most likely something was wrong with the firmware. So I exchanged the MVP with my vendor and now everything works well.

Still testing everything with the trial version but will most likely buy as Sage is pretty cool!
