Install problem: "Screen not found"
Hi there,
I've just come home from a year and a half abroad. Great times :-) I used Sage for Windows before, but would like to move to Linux for the server, so I bought it. I've tried installing it which, after a few tries, went well, but when it restarts (after having installed Gentoo and SageTV), things are less good. I can't see all that much on the screen but what I do get is: STVMC-931 login: (EE) No devices detected. Fatal server error: no screens found Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support at http://wiki.X.Org for help. Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information. XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 event remaining. I try to log in but it says it's an invalid password. I've tried to log in as root, with password of "sage" and with the password I chose at the end of the install. Any idea of what to do? |

I'm having the same problem (mostly), although I can log in. I get the same error messages. I had a perfectly-working version 5 system running and decided to upgrade.
I've tried re-emerging X11 but that didn't help. I also notice that although I've got an Nvidia-based video card, no Nvidia modules get loaded at boot. Both the Gentoo and Sage installations went well, although I may have made a mistake by doing an "emerge --update world" before installing Sage. I'm considering starting from scratch and sticking with the non-updated 2006.1 distro, but I'll wait a few days to see if anyone can point us in a useful direction.

Hi again. I reinstalled Gentoo 2006.1 and Sage 6 from scratch, using only the defaults, no updates, and all is working fine!
My only issue now is that SSH doesn't seem to be working (for remote linux management) and I cannot get out to the console with ctrl-alt-F1 anymore to set it up. Anyhow, if you haven't already, I recommend burning the ISO image of 2006.1 and taking all the defaults.

After install, I had to install nvidia video driver to get in the console, but now I can not get out with Cnt Alt F1 either. Have you found a way to fix this yet? . . . |

Yes, I found that the xset utility was not installed. It's used by the Sage startup script. Try "emerge x11-apps/xset". Restart after the installation is complete.
