Unusable mpegs

I've been able to record mpeg 2 at DVD Extra Long Play but when I try to play them with WMP I get no sound then WMP crashes.
If I try to open them with nanocosmos to edit, I get no sound then it crashes.
If I try to open them with tmpgenc it crashes.
The only thing that will play them is PowerDVD but it has stuttering sound...
Any ideas?
It seems to be creating a corrupt mpeg...

What card are you using to do the encoding? Do the files play back Ok with SageRecorder?

I'm using the Wintv Pvr 250 pci card.
Yes, the files play back fine with Sage Recorder, and the quality is superb... they just don't play properly elsewhere and the nanopeg editor won't open them so I can't edit them.
Well, actually when I open them in the editor, they start to play, but with no sound, then after a few seconds it crashes. Also if I press pause in the editor it also crashes.
WMP is the same, no sound and it crashes after a few seconds.
