Can you move 'recorded' video to a physical archive?
I really need help with this one. Yes I have space problems too. It just makes sense to physically archive video; that is, move 'just recorded' video to a lower bandwidth medium while retaining all programming info in Sage database (title, description, flags, ect...). Even with a networked installation of master server and +encoders I -still- need a NAS because the master cannot contain the space I need (PCI slots get full...). I want the ability to add space as needed (multiple noisy NFS servers for budget conscious). My real problem is stemmed from lack of throughput via NFS. Multiple simultaneous playback is fine over NFS, so is encoding, but watching live tv and encoding via NFS stresses bandwidth and results in a 3-5 second pause every 20-40 seconds or so while writes are commited via NFS. I figure if I can keep the high bandwith space physically attached to the master server from ever filling up, the master server should theorectically be able to buffer enough IO to avoid the intermittent pauses currently experienced in viewing live tv. My current configuration is SageTV V5 PIII 866 512mb w/ RAID0 240mb for /media. The NAS is on a seperate network directly connected to the master via cross-over cable with intel gigabit nics on each end. No network encoders yet, but soon. This config was definitely a step up from first install. The first install I tried to serve video and read/write to a NAS across 1 100mbit NIC and it choked horribly. USB NICs are useful for heartbeat and nothing else (blah).
Also too, I see dump messages of 'the playback buffer is full. Sage is not reading fast enough. Dropping frames.'. How can I control the size and location of these buffers??? Certainly this may very well be all or part of my problem???
Will Sage V6 address any of my woes???
Thanks to all for sharing in this forum. Your knowledge and experience is invaluable. Happy hacking!!
