SageTV Client won't connect

I downloaded the SageTV Client to try it out with my SageTV server in my living room. I have the two computers hooked up to each other through hard wires running on a Linksys router. I have enabled the Server in the Advanced section of the SageTV menu. I have opened the ports on the Linksys and killed the firewalls on both computers. When I type in the address of the Server into the Client, it gets to the "SageTV Connection is Initializing" part and then freezes before spitting out the message that it is "Unable to connect to the SageTV server at the specified address."

All the settings appear to be correct. I only have 5 days left on the client trial and would like to get it working. What's going on?

What version of SageTV are you using? Are the server & client using the same version? Have you tried restarting SageTV on the server after enabling the server option?

When you start the client, does it find any servers during its auto-discovery process?

What are the local IP addresses for your server & client PCs? Do they see each other as being on the same local network?

You could try enabling debug logging on the server & client to see what the logs say.

Along with what Opus said did you enable Sage on startup? What's most important of all is on the server you should see it running the SageTVServiceControl program. It doesn't matter if Sage is running on the server, you have to run the SageTVService Control program. Go to the Task manager on your server and look for it in the Processes tab. Also, it's best to set your IP address to static on your server. Finally, you said you killed the firewalls; make sure the windows firewall didn't come on automatically (from the control panel). Last, try pinging the server's IP address from the workstation and see if you get a reply.

Mike: I'm not sure if this was your point, but you don't have to run in service mode in order to use the server option in Detailed Setup -> Advanced. When not using service mode, you just have to be sure that the SageTV UI is running (it can be sleeping; that is still running) on the server PC.

Right - I see your point. I'm kind of an advocate of not using a server as a workstation (for anything) so in my case, if I go to the processes tab at the task manager on my server I see SageTVServiceControl (or something like that).

Thanks,
Mike
