Reloading server soon, Choosing 2003 Serv vs XP Pro

I am reloading my server soon, It will only be used for sage serving now. I am up against a decision as to load Server 2003 or XP pro, Part of me thinks server 2003 will be a bit faster but I have yet to try it for this purpose.

So I ask what os are you using for your server and is there a particular reason?

Server 2003 is not oficially supported by SageTV. If they consider a bug or issue related to it, you may not get support.

That said, it is what I use and am very happy with it since I set it up.

No Offense intended, Sage is a great product, However I have come to find the "Official" Support kinda sucks. Generally I use the forum when I really need any help, So support is not to much of an issue. Even though I didnt realize server 2003 wasn't officially supported, Which seems strange to me because sage seems like it would be right at home on a server product even better than it would on xp.

I tried running 2k3 for my server but it never quite worked right. I think (with no proof to back it up) that it was a driver problem. All the drivers for the capture cards are written for xp. Since I reinstalled with XP pro it has been stable and working great. I never used the functions that 2k3 server would get you. So for me xp was just what I needed.

I use Server 2003; unfortunately I got it as the Small Business Server, and I've personally found a lot of the config around that very confusing. I now wish I'd just stuck with XP Pro - really the only bit of Server 2003 I want is ActiveDirectory.

I use server 2003 and it's been great. It's basically XP without all the fancy bells-and-whistles (and some other server-ish stuff tweaked under the covers).

I'm running 2 PVR-150/16s, a DualTV, two feeds from cable boxes with serial control and a HDHomeRun. I'm running a RAID-1 array for the OS/Swap, and a RAID-5 array for std-def recordings. I have a dedicated disk for HD recordings. All this is managed by an Intel D945GB mobo with a 3.2GHz P4 and 2GB Memory.

To be honest I wouldn't think of running all that stuff on XP. Perhaps it would be fine. Then again, perhaps not....

Andy.

I too have been using 2003 Server with no problems. The only reason I used it over XP was for Active Directory. I have 4 PCs (none of them are Sage clients), and needed an easy way to "move" from PC to PC with everything following me.

I've been using Server 2003 for both my server and client install for quite some time. I like being able to RDP into my systems without having to take over the console... I think there are hacks to get around that in XP though. One thing to note, Server 2003 does *NOT* support Bluetooth natively. I have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse for my living room client..... there are hacks to add that functionality back into Server 2003, which I successfully have performed.

Hi,

I am going to beta Windows Home Server, which is based on Windows Server 2003.

I am curious as to what you folks running Server 2003 are using for drivers. I will be using two ATI Theater 650pro cards along with two vbox usb HD tuners. Neither ATI or vbox lists a driver specifically for Server 2003. Are you guys just using the XP drivers?

TIA

Jesse

I use the XP drivers for my PVR 150/250 cards, along with the AverMedia A180. Same deal with video card drivers.
